An Interview with East Cambridge Access Group
Disabled people's organisations and local disability groups are crucial to our work at AccessAble. Working with them helps us ensure that our Access Guides contain all the information that disabled people need to get out and about.
Who are these groups, and what do they do? Our interview series shines a light on their vital work.
This month we speak to East Cambridgeshire Access Group
Tell us a bit about your organisation.
Our group was set up in 1997 by East Cambridgeshire District Council, as a response to the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. Our aim then continues to be our mission today, promoting social inclusion by good design of buildings, facilities, services and pedestrian movement. Working towards an accessible society.
We are an independent organisation but is available as a ‘consultee’ to all local councils who want to better support Disabled residents in their area.
How many members do you have?
The group meets fortnightly and is usually 10 people including a Councillor from East Cambridgeshire District Council and supported by the Council's officers, although anyone living in East Cambridgeshire is welcome. We are all volunteers. All it costs is your time.
What are some of your group's successes?
As well as having input into access consideration for planning applications to East Cambridgeshire District Council, We have also advised external organisations on accessibility considerations, including the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, Ely Museum. We liaise with numerous MP's on access issues, alongside the RNIB and Cambridgeshire County Council. One of our notable campaigns is for the removal of street clutter, A Boards from our pavements and illegal parking on pavements.
How important would you say Detailed Access Information is when planning a trip or visiting a venue for the first time?
Essential as poor information may make the venue inaccessible.
In your view, what’s the best thing about an AccessAble Guide - How do they help the Disabled Community in your area?
AccessAble provide detailed access information in our area for a wide range of venues. View the Accessibility Guide to Cambridge
Finally, how can people find out more about your organisation?
