Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders.
  • You can borrow these from visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
  • Additional manual wheelchairs can be borrowed from a white hut which is located in the Gift and Plant courtyard. Occasionally there is a buggy that is operated by a member of the team. When it is available it can take visitors up to Upton House, the café and shop area.

Route to (Second Hand Bookshop)

  • From the Blue Badge bays located to the front of Upton House head straight ahead and turn right towards the shop courtyard. Proceed ahead and in the far left corner is a gap in the wall, pass through the gap and turn right. Continue ahead and go through an archway and follow the pathway around to the left up a steep slope. At the top proceed straight ahead to the shop entrance.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a very steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are gravel and bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are not wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Shop

  • There is step-free level access into the shop.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 70cm.
  • Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
  • The majority of aisle widths are under 150cm.
  • All flooring in the shop is smooth and even.
  • Some of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
  • There is no step-free level access around the shop.
  • Access around the shop is via steps.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • The counter does not have a hearing assistance system.
  • When there is a volunteer present cash payments are taken or put in an honesty box which is located on a window sill; alternatively visitors pay for books at the Gift and Plant shop.
