Summary

Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders.
  • You can borrow these from visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
  • Additional manual wheelchairs can be borrowed from a white hut which is located in the Gift and Plant courtyard. Occasionally there is a buggy that is operated by a member of the team. When it is available it can take visitors up to Upton House, the café and shop area.

Route to (Quiet Orchard and Wild Garden)

  • From the Blue Badge bays located to the front of Upton House head straight ahead up a steep slope. Turn right up another slight slope and proceed ahead towards the gate to enter the Quiet Orchard.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a very steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac and bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
  • Occasionally there is a buggy that is operated by a member of the team. When it is available it can take visitors up the top of the steep hill. This buggy cannot carry a wheelchair.

Outdoor Spaces

  • This information is for the access point located at the top of the steep hill.
  • There is step-free level access into the area.
  • There is a gate at the surveyed access point which is permanently held open.
  • The following outdoor facilities are available: woodland.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: gravel and bonded gravel.
  • Footpaths are available in some of the outdoor space.
  • The majority of the paths are not wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is step-free level access around some of the area.
  • There are steep ramps/slopes without handrails and more than 3 steps without handrails in the main areas.
  • The slopes and steps are randomly placed along the footpaths towards the Mirror Pool area.
  • There are not any bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.
  • The paths have easy open gates which may create obstacles for some users.
  • The only seating is in the Quiet Orchard and there is a manual gate to open along the Wild Garden walk.

Hikes and Trails

  • The walk is approximately 350 metres.
  • Starting at the Quiet Orchard follow the path downwards towards some steep slopes with uneven surfaces and unmarked steps.
    Passing through one manual gate which opens away from you (push) and has a width of 104cm.
    The walk takes you around the Mirror Pool and heads towards the Sunken Garden.
  • The walk is not open 24 hours.
  • The route includes the following surfaces: gravel and compacted gravel.
  • Some of the route contains steep gradients and steps.
  • These are found in the following areas: en route to the Mirror Pool and Sunken Garden.
  • The route is not clearly signposted.
  • Seating is not available on the route.
  • There are no toilet facilities along the route.
