Access Guide
Summary

- The most accessible entrance has steps, a slight ramp/slope and a manual door.
- This entrance is via the staff office which is to the left side of the building en route to the second hand bookshop.

- Other floors can be accessed via: stairs.
- There is step-free access to the ground floor only once inside.
- To access the Porcelain Room and Picture Gallery visitors have to use stairways.
- There is a member of staff available for help and assistance.
- Staff/volunteers can describe the layout and access around the site.

Equipment and Resources to Borrow
- You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
- Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders.
- You can borrow these from visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
- Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
- Additional manual wheelchairs can be borrowed from a white hut which is located in the Gift and Plant courtyard. Occasionally there is a buggy that is operated by a member of the team. When it is available it can take visitors up to Upton House, the café and shop area.
Parking
- This building has a car park.
- This is an open air car park with a gravel surface.
- Parking is free for all users.
- There are 3 Blue Badge parking bays.
- The nearest Blue Badge bay is 96m from the accessible entrance.
- There are 3 spaces which are unmarked on the ground but have 3 bollard markers indicating the spaces are for Blue Badge holders only.
Route to (Upton House Accessible Entrance)
- From the Blue Badge bays located to the front of Upton House head straight ahead and turn right towards the shop courtyard. Proceed ahead and in the far left corner is a gap in the wall, pass through the gap and then turn right. Continue ahead and the staff office and ramped accessible entrance is located on the right.
- The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
- Path surfaces along the route are gravel.
- The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
- Occasionally there is a buggy that is operated by a member of the team. When it is available it can take visitors to the Gift and Plant shop courtyard. This buggy cannot carry a wheelchair.
Entrance (Accessible Entrance)
- The entrance surveyed is located to the left of the main house via the office entrance.
- There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
- The slight ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
- The ramp overcomes the steps.
- There are 2 steps, which are unmarkedno handrails.
- All of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
- This entrance has a bell.
- Features at a suitable height for a wheelchair user include: the bell.
- There is a single manual door which opens towards you.
- The width of the opening is 73cm.
Entrance (Main Entrance)
- The entrance surveyed is located to the front of the house.
- There is stepped access at the entrance.
- There are 5 steps, which are unmarkedno handrails.
- Steps are split with a resting area.
- All of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
- There is a single manual door which opens away from you.
- The width of the opening is 118cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of more than 1.5cm.
- During summer months or weather permitting the door will be held permanently open.
Tour
- The tour is self-guided but volunteers/staff are available to provide additional information.
- The tour takes approximately 45 minutes.
- There is stepped access along the tour route.
- The majority of walkway widths are over 180cm.
- The tour can not be adapted to avoid inaccessible areas.
- Areas with stepped access only can be experienced by visitors via an information booklet and a photo album.
- The tour route may vary depending on the season.
- There is no (or very little) background noise along the tour route.
- Tour information includes the following formats: information booklets, pictorial and mobile app.
- There are sofas and chairs without armrests at regular intervals along the tour.
- The following furniture is permanently fixed: some of the chairs.
- Some flooring along the tour route is smooth and even.
- Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet, carpet (deep pile) and uneven floorboards.
- Some of the flooring includes large repeating patterns in bold colours, which may look like steps or holes to some people.
- Some of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
- Lighting levels are low throughout the tour route.
- From the beginning of November to the beginning of February accompanied tours can be booked from Tuesdays to Thursdays. There are stairs to access the Porcelain Lobby and Picture Gallery on the lower floor, although there is a partial downwards view from the library balcony.
Stairs (West Stair Landing to Porcelain Lobby)
- The floors which are accessible by stairs are ground floor West Landing to Porcelain Lobby.
- There are 17 steps between floors.
- The steps are not clearly marked with handrails on both sides.
- The highest step is 17cm high.
- Lighting levels are low.
Stairs (Porcelain Lobby to Picture Gallery Passage)
- The floors which are accessible by stairs are lower level Porcelain Lobby to Picture Gallery Passage.
- There are 3 steps between floors.
- The steps are not clearly marked with no handrails.
- The highest step is 14cm high.
- Lighting levels are low.
Stairs (Picture Gallery Passage to Picture Gallery)
- The floors which are accessible by stairs are lower floor from Picture Gallery Passage to Picture Gallery.
- There are 11 steps between floors.
- The steps are not clearly marked with a handrail on the right going down.
- The highest step is 15cm high.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
Outdoor Spaces (Main Lawn and Mirror Pool)
- This information is for the access point located on the left side of the house.
- There is step-free level access into the area.
- There is a gate at the surveyed access point which is permanently held open.
- The width of the gap is 135cm.
- The following outdoor facilities are available: gardens.
- The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: grass, gravel, compact earth, uncompacted earth and loose stones.
- Footpaths are available in some of the outdoor space.
- The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is step-free level access around some of the area.
- There are slight ramps/slopes without handrails, steep ramps/slopes without handrails and more than 3 steps without handrails in the main areas.
- Slight and steep slopes are located throughout the area.
There are steps at the rear of the lawn to access the tiered areas and mirror pool. - There are some bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.
