Equipment and Resources to Borrow
- You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
- Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders.
- You can borrow these from visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
- Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
- Additional manual wheelchairs can be borrowed from a white hut which is located in the Gift and Plant courtyard. Occasionally there is a buggy that is operated by a member of the team. When it is available it can take visitors up to Upton House, the café and shop area.
Route to (Gift and Plant Shop)
- From the Blue Badge bays located to the front of Upton House head straight ahead and turn right towards the shop courtyard. Proceed ahead and the shop is located on the left.
- The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
- Path surfaces along the route are gravel.
- The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
- Occasionally there is a buggy that is operated by a member of the team. When it is available it can take visitors from the Visitor Reception to the Gift and Plant courtyard. This buggy cannot carry a wheelchair.
Shop
- Access into the shop is via a slight ramp/slope.
- The slope is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
- The door is manual, opens outwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
- The width of the door opening is 103cm.
- Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of less than 1.5cm.
- The majority of aisle widths are under 150cm.
- All flooring in the shop is smooth and even.
- Some of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
- There is step-free level access around the shop.
- There is background noise here.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
- There is step-free level access to the counter.
- The height of the counter is 95cm.
- There is a low level counter at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- The counter has a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
- The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
- Services/facilities available in the shop include: a portable card machine for payment and a member of staff to provide assistance.
Toilet with Adaptations (Gift and Plant Shop - Ambulant - Right Hand Transfer)
- This toilet is located in the Gift and Plant shop courtyard.
- Access into the toilet is via a slight ramp/slope.
- The slope is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
- This toilet is approximately 14m from the Gift and Plant shop entrance.
- There is pictorial signage on or near the door.
- The door is manual, opens outwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
- The width of the toilet door opening is 98cm.
- The door has a lever twist lock.
- Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
- The dimensions of the cubicle are 171cm x 222cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
- There is a lateral transfer space to the right of the seat.
- The lateral transfer space is 95cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
- There is a spatula flush on the transfer side.
- The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the door, a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side and a vertical grab rail on the transfer side.
- There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.
- The following fixtures can be reached from the toilet seat: toilet roll holder, wash basin and soap dispenser.

Parent and Baby Room / Baby Feeding Room

- The height of the baby change table is 95cm.
- The wash basin tap type is twist/turn.
- There is a chair without armrests available in the room.
- Waste bins include: a nappy bin and a general waste bin with lid.
- The external door into the toilet block has a width of 77cm and is permanently held open. There is a slight slope at this entrance.
