Summary

Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders.
  • You can borrow these from visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
  • Additional manual wheelchairs can be borrowed from a white hut which is located in the Gift and Plant courtyard. Occasionally there is a buggy that is operated by a member of the team. When it is available it can take visitors up to Upton House, the café and shop area.

Route to (Bog and Sunken Garden)

  • From the Blue Badge bays located to the front of Upton House head straight ahead and turn right towards the shop courtyard. Proceed ahead and in the far left corner is a gap in the wall, enter through the gap and turn right. Continue ahead through the archway towards the rear of the house. Turn right and left down some steps towards the lawn. Continue to the right and head towards the far side of the house, where you turn left towards the opening gap to the beginning of the walk.
  • The route to the area includes more than 3 steps without a handrail.
  • Path surfaces along the route are gravel, cobbles and paving stones.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
  • The route is not suitable for wheelchair users due to there being steps.

Outdoor Spaces

  • This information is for the access point located to the rear of Upton House.
  • Access into the area is via a slight ramp/slope.
  • The slope is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There is open access at the surveyed access point.
  • The following outdoor facilities are available: woodland and gardens.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: gravel, bonded gravel, compact earth and loose stones.
  • Footpaths are available in some of the outdoor spaces.
  • The majority of the paths are not wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is step-free level access around some of the area.
  • There are steep ramps/slopes without handrails and more than 3 steps without handrails in the main areas.
  • Part of the walk around the sunken gardens includes some steps and slopes taking you from one level to the other.
  • There are some bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.
  • The Bog Garden is only open during the months of June, July and August each year.
