Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, sunglasses and communication cards.

  • You can borrow or hire the following mobility vehicles: off-road/all-terrain mobility scooters. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

Route to (the House)

  • From the visitor centre follow the path through Home Farm and continue up the hill onto the main drive.
    Follow the winding path downhill until you reach a crossroads. The house is on the right.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a very steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are concrete and gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is an accessible shuttle which can take visitors to this area.

Entrance (Main)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the House.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The steep portable ramp is under 75cm wide, with no handrails.
  • The ramp overcomes the step.
  • Please contact a member of staff for use of the portable ramp.
  • There is 1 step, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
  • There are double manual doors which open away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 156cm.

Tour

  • The tour is self-guided but volunteers/staff are available to provide additional information.
  • The tour takes approximately 30 minutes.
  • There is stepped access along the tour route.
  • There are doorways or openings used on the tour which are under 75cm wide.
  • The majority of walkway widths are over 180cm.
  • The tour can be adapted to avoid inaccessible areas.
  • There is background noise along the tour route.
  • Tour information includes the following formats: Braille.
  • The tour does not have a hearing assistance system.
  • There are a mixture of chairs with and without armrests at regular intervals along the tour.
  • There are folding seats/stools available to take around the tour.
  • Some flooring along the tour route is smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet.
  • Some of the flooring includes large repeating patterns in bold colours, which may look like steps or holes to some people.
  • Some of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
  • Lighting levels are low throughout the tour route.
  • There is a mixture of wooden flooring, carpeted flooring and flooring with rubber matting. The floor is historic and uneven in places.

Entrance (Toilets)

  • The entrance surveyed is located to the rear right of the House.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The slight ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • The ramp overcomes the step.
  • There is 1 step, which is unmarked, with no handrails.
  • The step is not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
  • There are double manual gates which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 145cm.

Toilet with Adaptations (House - Ambulant - Left Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located in the courtyard, to the right as you face the house entrance.
  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • This toilet is approximately 30m from the house entrance.
  • There is pictorial signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 83cm.
  • The door has a lever twist lock.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 136cm x 200cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the left of the seat but it is obstructed.
  • The lateral transfer space is 97cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a spatula flush on the non transfer side.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the door, a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side, a vertical grab rail on the transfer side and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.

  • There is step-free level access into the room.
  • The door is manual, opens inwards and has a medium colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 87cm.
  • The height of the baby change table is 97cm.
  • The wash basin tap type is push.
  • There is no seating available in the room.
  • Waste bins include: a nappy bin.
