Equipment and Resources to Borrow
- You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
- You can borrow these from the visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
- Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
Route to (the Barn Café)
- Exit the visitor reception and take the first left, through an open doorway with a width of 96cm.
Go into the house on the left and through to the house exit.
The Barn Café is straight ahead after exiting the house. - The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
- Path surfaces along the route are gravel and paving stones.
- The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
Entrance (Front Right - Accessible)
- The entrance surveyed is located to the front right of the café.
- There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
- The slight ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with handrails on both sides.
- There is a single manual door which is permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 85cm.
Entrance (Front Left - Stepped)
- The entrance surveyed is located to the front left of the café.
- There is stepped access at the entrance.
- There is a single manual door (with a locked extension leaf) which is permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 115cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of less than 1.5cm.
- There are 4 steps beyond the entrance, which are unmarked, with handrails on both sides.
- The handrails cover all steps.
- Some of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
Entrance (Rear - Stepped)
- The entrance surveyed is located at the rear of the café.
- There is stepped access at the entrance.
- There are double manual doors (with one door locked) which is permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 167cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of more than 1.5cm.
- There are 4 steps beyond the entrance, which are unmarked, with handrails on both sides.
- The handrails cover all steps.
- Some of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
Eating and Drinking
- This is a café which serves hot and cold meals and snacks.
- There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered.
- Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
- Menu types include: menu boards.
- Menus are easy to read (large clear font with contrasting colours).
- The following are available here: drinking straws, takeaway cups, two handled cups, easy grip cutlery, takeaway cutlery and a portable card machine for payment.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
- There is no (or very little) background noise here.
- There is a hearing assistance system which is not signed.
- The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
- There is a counter over 85cm high without a tray rail.
- The counter is 91cm high.
- There is not a section of the counter at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- There is step-free level access around the seating area.
- There are tables and chairs without armrests available in the seating area.
- The seating area does not have: a priority table and a mixture of chairs with and without armrests.
- Tables are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- The surface height of the tables is 76cm.
- All flooring in the area is smooth and even.
Picnic Area (Front and Rear)
- The following information describes the picnic area located to the front and rear of the Barn Café.
- Access into the area is via steps and a steep ramp/slope.
- The slope is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with a handrail on the left going down.
- There are 4 steps, which are unmarked, with handrails on both sides.
- There are bench seats and picnic tables.
- No chairs have armrests on both sides.
- Adapted picnic tables are available.
- The distance between the floor and the underside of the lowest picnic table is 65cm.
- The distance between the floor and the underside of the highest picnic table is 67cm.
- The standard height for the underside of picnic tables is 72cm.
- The following furniture is permanently fixed: all of the chairs.
- There is step-free level access around the area.
- The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
- Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to grass and cobbles.
Toilet with Adaptations (Right Hand Transfer)
- This toilet is located to the left of the Barn Café Accessible Entrance, at the front of the café.
- There is step-free level access into the toilet.
- This toilet is approximately 42m from the Barn Café Accessible Entrance.
- There is pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
- The door is manual, opens outwards and has a medium colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
- The width of the toilet door opening is 90cm.
- The door has a sliding bolt lock.
- Internally the door has a medium colour contrast.
- The dimensions of the cubicle are 160cm x 187cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
- There is a lateral transfer space to the right of the seat.
- The lateral transfer space is 91cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
- There is a lever flush on the transfer side.
- The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side and a vertical grab rail on the transfer side.
- The following fixtures can be reached from the toilet seat: toilet roll holder.
- The following fixtures cannot be reached from the toilet seat: wash basin, soap dispenser and hand dryer.
- The height of the toilet seat above floor level is 41cm.
- The wash basin tap type is lever.

- The following have a high colour contrast with their surroundings: the internal door and the floor.
- The following have a less clear colour contrast with their surroundings: all grab rails and the toilet seat.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
Standard Toilet
- There is step-free level access into the toilet.
- The door is manual, permanently held open and has a medium colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
- The width of the door opening is 69cm.
- Internally the door has a medium colour contrast.
- The male and female standard toilets were surveyed.
- The width of the widest cubicle door opening is 70cm.
- The wash basin tap type is push.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
- There are hand dryers.
