Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys and soft toy.
  • You can borrow these from the Visitor Reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
  • All-terrain manual wheelchairs are also available in addition to regular manual wheelchairs.

Route to (The Fairy Tale Forest Cafe)

  • Follow the path from the car park until you reach the gate.
    Continue past the gate and cross Main Road and continue ahead.
    At the fork, turn left and follow the path ahead past the house.
    At the fork, turn right and continue ahead and The Fairy Tale Forest Cafe will be on the left.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Entrance

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the building.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The steep slope is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There are double manual doors which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 217cm.

Eating and Drinking

  • This is a café which serves hot and cold meals and snacks.
  • There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered.
  • Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
  • Menu types include: written wall menus, menu boards and counter menus.
  • Menus are easy to read (large clear font with contrasting colours).
  • The following are available here: drinking straws, takeaway cups, a portable card machine for payment, large-handled mugs and large-handled cutlery.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.

  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to uneven paving/tiles.

  • A member of staff does not need to be notified for use of the lift.
  • The floors which are accessible by this lift are G, 1.
  • Externally the lift has: a door with a low colour contrast to the surroundings, buttons with a medium colour contrast to the surroundings, controls at a suitable height for a wheelchair user, tactile markings and Braille markings.
  • The lift does have a recommended turning space (150cm x 150cm) in front of it.
  • The lift door opening width is 89cm.
  • The dimensions of the lift are 95cm x 147cm.
  • Internally the lift has: controls at a suitable height for a wheelchair user, Braille markings, tactile markings, buttons with a medium colour contrast to the surroundings and a visual floor indicator.
