Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys and soft toy.
  • You can borrow these from the Visitor Reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
  • All-terrain manual wheelchairs are also available in addition to regular manual wheelchairs.

Route to (Museum)

  • Follow the path from the car park until you reach the gate.
    Continue past the gate and cross Main Road and continue ahead.
    At the fork, turn left and follow the path ahead past the house.
    At the fork, turn right and continue ahead and the Museum will be on the right.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Entrance

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the rear of Sudbury Hall.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There are double automatic doors which open by sliding.
  • The width of the opening is 119cm.

Tour

  • The tour is self-guided but volunteers/staff are available to provide additional information.
  • The tour takes approximately 90 minutes.
  • There is step-free access via lift throughout the tour.
  • The majority of walkway widths are between 120cm and 180cm.
  • There is background noise along the tour route.
  • The following may be experienced on the tour: tactile experiences.
  • Tour information includes the following formats: Braille and information board.
  • The tour does not have a hearing assistance system.
  • There are bench seats and chairs without armrests at regular intervals along the tour.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: some of the chairs.
  • Some flooring along the tour route is smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet and uneven paving/tiles.
  • Some of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
  • Lighting levels are varied throughout the tour route.
  • Large print guides are also available.

Toilet with Adaptations (Museum - Ambulant - Peninsular Transfer)

  • This toilet is located on the ground floor of the museum.
  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • There is no signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens inwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 89cm.
  • The door has a locking handle.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 207cm x 266cm and it has a turning space of at least 150cm x 150cm.
  • There are lateral transfer spaces on both sides of the seat.
  • The transfer space on the left as you face the toilet is 89cm.
  • The transfer space on the right as you face the toilet is 86cm.
  • There is a spatula flush on the right transfer side.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the transfer side and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.
  • There is a dropdown rail on both sides of the seat.
  • The following fixtures can be reached from the toilet seat: toilet roll holder on the dropdown rail.
  • The following fixtures cannot be reached from the toilet seat: wash basin, soap dispenser, towel dispenser and hand dryer.

  • Some of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm) .
  • There is a single manual door which opens away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 85cm.
