Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs and mountain trikes. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, soft toy and accessible maps.

  • You can borrow or hire the following mobility vehicles: off-road/all-terrain mobility scooters. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

  • Hire charges do not apply, however, there is a donation box.
    There is a pop up quiet/sensory tent available for visitors to borrow.
    There is no Braille map available, but there is a Braille guide for borrowing, plus a large print guide.
    A stair climber is available to book in advance.

Route to (the House)

  • From visitor reception, take the pathway from the exit down to the footbridge over the road.
    Then walk through the walled garden which leads to a roadway leading slightly uphill to the house.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a steep ramp/slope and includes more than 3 steps without a handrail.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac and bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is an accessible shuttle which can take visitors to this area.
  • There is a shuttle bus from visitor reception to the house.

Entrance (Exhibition Area and Toilets)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the side of the house, near the staff parking.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There is a single manual door which opens away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 100cm.
  • These doors can be used to bypass the steps located at the front of the house.

Attraction / Exhibit (House)

  • The majority of walkway widths are between 120cm and 180cm.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
  • Exhibit information includes the following formats: pictorial and information board.
  • The exhibits do not have hearing assistance systems.
  • There is step-free level access around the area.
  • There are no seats available in the area.
  • All flooring in the area is smooth and even.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.

Standard Toilet (House/Exhibition Area)

  • Access into the toilet is via a step.
  • There is 1 step, which is clearly marked, with no handrails.
  • The door is manual, opens inwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 80cm.
  • Internally the door has a medium colour contrast.
  • The male standard toilet was surveyed.
  • There is also a female toilet in the same location.
  • The width of the widest cubicle door opening is 64cm.
  • The wash basin tap type is push.
  • Lighting levels are bright.
  • There are hand dryers.

Entrance

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the house.
  • There is step-free access via lift at the entrance.
  • There are 10+ steps, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
  • Steps are split with a resting area.
  • All of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
  • There are double manual doors which open away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 137cm.
  • There is a stair climber to overcome the steps.
  • The entrance is step free via stair climber and it is recommended that the stair climber be booked in advance.

Visitor Reception (Entrance Hall)

  • There is step-free level access around the area.
  • The majority of aisle widths are over 150cm.
  • There is room for wheelchair users to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm) throughout the area.
  • Some of the flooring is smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet.
  • Some of the flooring includes large repeating patterns in bold colours, which may look like steps or holes to some people.
  • Some of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
  • There is step-free level access to the counter.
  • The height of the counter is 77cm.
  • The counter has a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
