Parking

  • This site has a car park.
  • The vehicle route from the main road to the car park includes: speed bumps.
  • This is an open air car park with a tarmac surface.
  • Parking is free for National Trust members and Blue Badge holders, but charges apply for all other visitors.
  • There are clearly presented payment signs.
  • Maps and information boards are available.
  • There are 4 Blue Badge parking bays.
  • The dimensions of the designated Blue Badge parking bay(s) surveyed are 260cm x 450cm.
  • There is a hatched zone on both sides but not to the rear.
  • The nearest Blue Badge bay is 12m from the visitor reception.
  • Obstacles from the car park include: a lack of pedestrian walkways to cross the car park.
  • There are not parent and child parking bays available.
  • There is 1 electric vehicle charging point.
  • There is no electric vehicle charging point designated for Blue Badge holders.
  • There is not a designated drop-off point.

Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following mobility vehicles: a tramper. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • You can borrow these from visitor reception at the Stackpole Centre. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • A beach wheelchair is also available to borrow.
    You must ring visitor reception and book in advance to use the equipment.

Visitor Reception

  • Access into the area is via a steep ramp/slope.
  • The ramp is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • The door is manual, permanently held open and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 136cm.
  • Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
  • There is step-free level access around the area.
  • The majority of aisle widths are under 150cm.
  • There is no room for wheelchair users to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm) within the majority of the area.
  • All flooring is smooth and even.
  • There is step-free level access to the counter.
  • The height of the counter is 91cm.
  • There is not a low level section at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The counter has windows, TVs, glazed screens or mirrors which could adversely affect the ability of someone to lip read.
  • The counter has a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
  • There are bench seats available in the visitor reception.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: all of the chairs.
  • Services/facilities available include: a portable card machine for payment and a member of staff to provide assistance.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.

Outdoor Spaces (Countryside)

  • Access into the area is via steps and steep ramps/slopes.
  • The access points to the area are located at the far end of the car park (step-free access) and near the tea room (stepped access).
  • There is a gate at the surveyed access point which opens away from you (push).
  • The gate is self-closing.
  • The width of the gap is 100cm.
  • The following outdoor facilities are available: woodland and open countryside.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: grass, compact earth, sand and loose stones.
  • Footpaths are available in all of the outdoor space.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is step-free level access around some of the area.
  • There are slight ramps/slopes without handrails and steep ramps/slopes without handrails in the main areas.
  • The slight slopes are approximately 50 metres after the step-free level access point from the car park.
    Steep slopes are encountered once you enter the woodland area.
  • There are not any bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.
  • The paths have gates which may create obstacles for some users.

Outdoor Spaces (Beach)

  • Access into the area is via steep ramps/slopes.
  • The slope is over 150cm wide.
  • The access points to the area are located in the far left corner of the beach (stepped access) or off the woodland area detailed in the countryside outdoor spaces section of this guide.
  • There is open access at the surveyed access point.
  • The following outdoor facilities are available: a beach.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: sand.
  • Footpaths are not available in all of the outdoor space.
  • There is step-free level access around some of the area.
  • There are slight ramps/slopes without handrails in the main areas.
  • There is a slight slope down to the water.

Hikes and Trails

  • The trail is approximately 2 miles long.
  • From the gated access point at the far end of the car park, go straight ahead through another gate.
    Follow the track passing through a further gate.
    After approximately 100 metres go through a gate on the left and enter the woodland area.
    Take the path on the left.
    After approximately 300 metres the paths surface will change to sand and you will start going through the sand dunes towards the beach.
    Enter the beach via the very steep slope and turn left.
    At the end of the beach you will find 20+ steps to go back up onto the headland.
    Go through the archway and continue up more steps until you reach the grass area.
    Follow this path until you reach a gate, go through it and follow the steps down until you reach the tea room.
  • The trail is open 24 hours.
  • None of the paths are lit at night.
  • The route includes the following surfaces: grass, compacted gravel, mud and sand.
  • Some of the route contains steep gradients, steps and very uneven surfaces.
  • These are found in the following areas: after turning off the wide track and going into the woodland.
  • There are alternative routes to avoid these areas.
  • The route is clearly signposted.
  • The route has information boards without maps.
  • Seating is not available on the route.
  • There are toilet facilities available at Stackpole Quay.
    To avoid the inaccessible areas, the best option is to go out to the woodland and come back the same way.

Picnic Area (Tea Room)

  • The following information describes the picnic area located ahead of the tea room.
  • Access into the area is via steps and a steep ramp/slope (which bypasses any steps).
  • The ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with a handrail on the left going down.
  • There are 6 steps, which are clearly marked, with a handrail on the right going down.
  • There are picnic tables.
  • No chairs have armrests on both sides.
  • Adapted picnic tables are available.
  • The standard height for the underside of picnic tables is 77cm.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: all of the chairs and all of the tables.
  • There is step-free level access around the area.
  • The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to uneven paving/tiles.

Entrance (Tea Room)

  • The entrance surveyed is located within the picnic area.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The steep ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with a handrail on the right going up.
  • The ramp overcomes the steps.
  • There are 3 steps, which are clearly marked, with no handrails.
  • All of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
  • There are double manual doors (with one door locked) which is permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 93cm.

Eating and Drinking

  • This is a tea room which serves hot and cold meals and snacks.
  • There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered.
  • Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
  • Menu types include: written wall menus and counter menus.
  • Menus are easy to read (large clear font with contrasting colours).
  • The following are available here: drinking straws, takeaway cups, two handled cups, easy grip cutlery, takeaway cutlery and a portable card machine for payment.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There is background noise here which varies, depending on the time of day.
  • There is a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
  • There is a counter over 85cm high with a tray rail.
  • The counter is 90cm high.
  • There is not a section of the counter at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • There is step-free level access around the seating area.
  • There are tables and chairs without armrests available in the seating area.
  • The seating area does not have: room for a wheelchair user to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm), a priority table and a mixture of chairs with and without armrests.
  • There are no tables which are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The surface height of the tables is 72cm.
  • All flooring in the area is smooth and even.

Exit (Tea Room)

  • The exit is located to the right of the payment counter.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the exit.
  • There is a single manual door which is permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 78cm.
  • There is a steep ramp between 75cm and 150cm wide beyond the exit, with a handrail on the left going down.
  • The ramp overcomes the steps.
  • There are 2 steps beyond the exit, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
  • The steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).

Entrance (Toilet Block)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the toilet block building.
  • There is step-free access via slope at the entrance.
  • The slight slope is over 150cm wide.
  • There is an opening without doors .
  • The width of the opening is 158cm.

Toilet with Adaptations (Toilet Block - Accessible - Left Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located within the toilet block.
  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • This toilet is approximately 1m from the toilet block entrance.
  • There is pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 82cm.
  • The door has a locking handle.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 230cm x 170cm and it has a turning space of at least 150cm x 150cm.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the left of the seat.
  • The lateral transfer space is 165cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a lever flush on the non transfer side.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the door, a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side, a vertical grab rail on the transfer side and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.
  • There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.
  • The following fixtures can be reached from the toilet seat: toilet roll holder, wash basin and soap dispenser.
  • The following fixtures cannot be reached from the toilet seat: hand dryer.
  • The height of the toilet seat above floor level is 46cm.
  • The height of the toilet roll holder is 93cm.
  • The wash basin tap type is lever mixer.
  • The height of the wash basin is 74cm.
  • The height of the soap dispenser is 94cm.
  • The height of the hand dryer is 90cm.
  • The height of the baby change is 81cm.
  • There is a pull cord emergency alarm but it was tied up at the time of the survey.
  • There is a shelf located where it is reachable for seated and standing users.

  • The cubicle has: a full length mirror, a waste bin with lid and a sanitary bin.
  • The cubicle does not have coat hooks.
  • The following have a high colour contrast with their surroundings: the internal door, some grab rails, the dropdown rail and the floor.
  • The following have a less clear colour contrast with their surroundings: some grab rails.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.

Standard Toilet (Toilet Block - Female)

  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • The door is manual, permanently held open and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 71cm.
  • Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
  • The female toilet was surveyed.
  • There is also a male toilet in the same location.
  • The width of the widest cubicle door opening is 58cm.
  • The wash basin tap type is push.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There are hand dryers.
