Access Guide
Summary
- View information about opening hours.
- The most accessible entrance has a steep ramp/slope, manual doors and doors permanently held open.
- This entrance is at the front of the café.
- There is step-free access once inside.
- There is a member of staff available for help and assistance.
- The following are also available: seating, a BSL interpreter and a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
- At the time of our visit the hearing assistance system was working.
- This site is not part of the Sunflower Lanyard Scheme.
- Toilet and changing facilities available include: a toilet with some adaptations.
- The toilet with adaptations for disabled people surveyed can be found to the right of the café.
- This toilet with adaptations for disabled people is approximately 20m from the entrance.
Equipment and Resources to Borrow
- You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

- Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
- The accessible visitor shuttle bus operates from the front of the café.
An accessible drop-off point is also available, please ask a member of staff at the Visitor Reception upon arrival who can direct you to the drop-off point.
Route to (the Café)
- From the Visitor Reception walk down the long steep slope to the left, and then turn right at the bottom down a slight slope.
The café will be straight ahead of you. - The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope and is step-free via a steep ramp/slope.
- Path surfaces along the route are paving stones and bonded gravel.
- The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
- There is also stepped access (4 steps or more with a handrail) straight ahead after you exit the Visitor Reception which bypasses the long slopes.
Entrance
- The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the café.
- There is step-free access via slope at the entrance.
- The slight slope is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
- There are double manual doors which are permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 152cm.
- There is a slight ramp between 75cm and 150cm wide beyond the entrance, with no handrails.
- The ramp overcomes the step.
- There is 1 step beyond the entrance, which is clearly marked, with no handrails.
Eating and Drinking
- This is a café which serves hot and cold meals and snacks.
- There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered and a self service counter.
- Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
- Menu types include: written wall menus.
- Menus are easy to read (large clear font with contrasting colours).
- The following are available here: drinking straws, takeaway cups, two handled cups and easy grip cutlery.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
- There is no (or very little) background noise here.
- There is a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
- The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
- There is a counter over 85cm high with a tray rail.
- The counter is 90cm high.
- There is not a section of the counter at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- There is step-free level access around the seating area.
- There are tables, bench seats and a mixture of chairs with and without armrests available in the seating area.
- The seating area does not have: a priority table.
- There are some tables which are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
- The surface height of the tables is 76cm.
- The following furniture is permanently fixed: some of the chairs.
- All flooring in the area is smooth and even.
- There is additional seating available outside the front of the café.
Seats outside the café are a mixture of seats with and without armrests.
The surface height of the outside tables are between 72cm and 74cm.
Picnic Area
- The following information describes the picnic area located to the front of the café building.
- Access into the area is via slight ramps/slopes.
- The slope is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
- There are tables, bench seats and picnic tables.
- No chairs have armrests on both sides.
- Adapted picnic tables are available.
- The standard height for the underside of picnic tables is 65cm.
- The following furniture is permanently fixed: some of the chairs, some of the tables and seating which is fixed to tables.
- There is no step-free level access around the area.
- The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
- Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to grass.
Toilet with Adaptations (Ambulant - Right Hand Transfer)
- This toilet is located outside, to right of the café.
- Access into the toilet is via slight ramps/slopes.
- The slope is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
- This toilet is approximately 20m from the Café entrance.
- There is pictorial signage on or near the door.
- The door is manual, opens outwards and has a medium colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
- The width of the toilet door opening is 80cm.
- The door has a twist lock.
- Internally the door has a medium colour contrast.
- The dimensions of the cubicle are 192cm x 176cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
- There is a lateral transfer space to the right of the seat but it is obstructed.
- The lateral transfer space is 125cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
- There is a lever flush on the transfer side.
- The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the door, a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.
- There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.
- The following fixtures can be reached from the toilet seat: toilet roll holder and wash basin.
- The following fixtures cannot be reached from the toilet seat: hand dryer.
- The height of the toilet seat above floor level is 48cm.
- The height of the toilet roll holder is 83cm.
- The wash basin tap type is lever.
- The height of the wash basin is 74cm.
- The height of the hand dryer is 100cm.
- There is a pull cord emergency alarm at a recommended height (within 10cm from the floor).
- There is not a shelf.
- The cubicle has: a waste bin with lid and a sanitary bin.
- The cubicle does not have a full length mirror.
- The height of the coat hook is 157cm from the floor.
- The following have a high colour contrast with their surroundings: the internal door, all grab rails, the dropdown rail and the floor.
- The following have a less clear colour contrast with their surroundings: the toilet seat.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
