Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • You can borrow these from the Visitor Reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.

Route to (South Cottage)

  • Turn left on exiting the Visitor Reception and follow the path to the right of the oast.
    Turn right and the entrance to the formal gardens is on the left.
    Pass through the arch below the Tower.
    Turn right down the steps and follow the path leading to South Cottage.
    A step free route is available by taking a slightly longer pathway to the right, through the Rose Garden.
  • The route to the area is step-free level.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac, gravel and paving stones.
  • The majority of the paths are not wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
  • Paving stones may be slippery when wet. The step free route through the Rose Garden has narrow walkways (minimum of 90cm). Please see the free 'Access Information for Wheelchair Users' for more details. This is free, available from the Visitor Reception.

Entrance

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the cottage.
  • There is stepped access at the entrance.
  • There is 1 step, which is unmarked.
  • The step is not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
  • There is a single manual door which opens away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 72cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of less than 1.5cm.

Attraction / Exhibit

  • The majority of walkway widths are under 120cm.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
  • Exhibit information includes the following formats: pictorial and information board.
  • The exhibits do not have hearing assistance systems.
  • There is no step-free level access around the area.
  • There are long tables, sofas and chairs without armrests available in the area.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: some of the chairs and some of the tables.
  • Flooring in the area is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet and uneven paving/tiles.
  • Lighting levels are low in some areas.
  • There are two unmarked steps from the first room to the remainder of the cottage.

  • The highest step is 20cm high.
