Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • You can borrow these from the visitor centre. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.

Route to (House)

  • From the courtyard, go through the gate.
    Proceed along the path along the side of the house.
    At the end, turn right along the path towards the front of the house and entrance.
    There are slight slopes and uneven surfaces on the pathways approaching the entrance.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are compact earth, gravel, cobbles and paving stones.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Entrance (Accessible Access Entrance/Exit)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the north façade.
  • There is step-free access via slope at the entrance.
  • The slight ramp is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • The slope overcomes the steps.
  • There are 4 steps, which is unmarked, with no handrails.
  • Some of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
  • There are double manual doors which opens away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 140cm.

Entrance (North Façade)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the north façade.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • There is a single manual door which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 107cm.
  • There is 1 step beyond the entrance, which are unmarked, with no handrails.

Tour

  • The tour is self-guided but volunteers/staff are available to provide additional information.
  • The tour takes approximately 1 hour.
  • There is step-free access via ramp along the tour route.
  • The majority of walkway widths are between 120cm and 180cm.
  • The tour can not be adapted to avoid inaccessible areas.
  • Areas with stepped access only can be experienced by visitors via an information booklet.
  • The tour route may vary depending on the season.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise along the tour route.
  • Tour information includes the following formats: information booklets.
  • The tour has a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
  • There are a mixture of chairs with and without armrests at regular intervals along the tour.
  • Some flooring along the tour route is smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet, uneven paving/tiles and uneven floorboards.
  • Some of the flooring includes large repeating patterns in bold colours, which may look like steps or holes to some people.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good throughout the tour route.
  • The portable ramps provide to access the tour on the ground floor only.

Stairs

  • The floors which are accessible by stairs are G and 1.
  • There are more than 20 steps between floors.
  • The steps are not clearly marked with a handrail on the left going up.
  • The highest step is 15cm high.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.

Exit (Courtyard)

  • The exit is located at the rear of the building.
  • There is not step-free access at the exit.
  • There is a single manual door which opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 89cm.
  • The exit opening does not have a minimum height of 200cm.
  • There are 4 steps beyond the exit, which are unmarked, with handrails on both sides.
  • The handrails do not cover all steps.
  • Some of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm) .
  • The first two steps have no handrails.
