Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.

Route to (the Tea Room)

  • The tea room is alongside the car park, opposite the Blue Badge bays.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are gravel and paving stones.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There were temporary bollards on the approach to the external ramp at the time of survey (May 2024). There is a width of 120cm between them and they are 63cm high.

Entrance (to Picnic Area and Rear Entrance)

  • The entrance surveyed is located to the right of the tea room.
  • There is step-free level access at the entrance.
  • The step is not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
  • There is a single manual gate which is permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 99cm.
  • There is a dropped kerb in front of this gate.
    The paving slabs on the approach are uneven.

Entrance (Main)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the building.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The steep ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • The ramp overcomes the steps.
  • There are 3 steps, which are unmarkedno handrails.
  • There are double manual doors which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 108cm.
  • There is a second set of manual doors which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 115cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of less than 1.5cm.
  • There is a slight ramp between 75cm and 150cm wide beyond the entrance, with no handrails.
  • There are 2 steps beyond the entrance, which are clearly marked, with no handrails.
  • Some of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).

Entrance (Rear)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the rear of the building.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The slight ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There is a single manual door which is permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 84cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of less than 1.5cm.
  • Using this entrance bypasses the steps that access the seating area from the counter.

Picnic Area

  • The following information describes the picnic area located to the right of the tea room.
  • There is step-free level access into the area.
  • There are picnic tables.
  • No chairs have armrests on both sides.
  • Adapted picnic tables are available.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the lowest picnic table is 66cm.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the highest picnic table is 71cm.
  • The surface height of the lowest table is 76cm.
  • The surface height of the highest table is 76cm.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: all of the chairs and all of the tables.
  • There is step-free level access around the area.
  • The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to grass.

Eating and Drinking

  • This is a tea room which serves hot and cold snacks.
  • There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered.
  • Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
  • Menu types include: written wall menus and counter menus.
  • Menus are easy to read (large clear font with contrasting colours).
  • The following are available here: drinking straws, takeaway cups and a portable card machine for payment.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
  • There is not a hearing assistance system.
  • There is a counter over 85cm high without a tray rail.
  • The counter is 89cm high.

Toilet with Adaptations (Tea Room - Ambulant - Right Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located on the right as you enter the tea room.
  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • This toilet is approximately 3m from the main entrance.
  • There is pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens by sliding and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 81cm.
  • The door has a twist lock.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of less than 1.5cm.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 188cm x 184cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the right of the seat but it is obstructed.
  • The lateral transfer space is 120cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a spatula flush on the transfer side.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.
  • There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.
  • The following fixtures can be reached from the toilet seat: toilet roll holder, wash basin and hand dryer.
  • The following fixtures cannot be reached from the toilet seat: soap dispenser.
  • The height of the toilet seat above floor level is 47cm.
  • The height of the toilet roll holder is 79cm.
  • The wash basin tap type is lever mixer.
  • The height of the wash basin is 75cm.
  • The height of the soap dispenser is 92cm.
  • The height of the hand dryer is 110cm.
  • The height of the baby change is 90cm.
  • There is no emergency alarm.
  • There is not a shelf.
  • The cubicle has: a waste bin with lid, a nappy/incontinence items bin and a sanitary bin.
  • The cubicle does not have a full length mirror.
  • The height of the coat hook is 130cm from the floor.
  • The following have a high colour contrast with their surroundings: the dropdown rail, the floor and all grab rails.
  • The following have a less clear colour contrast with their surroundings: the toilet seat and the internal door.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There is a manual sliding door, 71cm wide to access the toilet area.

Standard Toilet (Tea Room)

  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 70cm.
  • Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of less than 1.5cm.
  • The shared standard toilet was surveyed.
  • The wash basin tap type is lever.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There are hand dryers.
  • There is a manual sliding door, 71cm wide to access the toilet area.
