Route to (Upper Garden Café and Shop)

  • From the visitor centre, proceed along the footpath at the rear of the visitor centre.
    At the signpost turn right and proceed along the footpath.
    Follow the signs for the garden shop and café.
    The route is approximately 700m long.
    There are slight slopes and ramps on the pathways along the route.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are compact earth, tarmac and gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is a shuttle which can take visitors to this area, but wheelchair users will need to transfer into it.

Entrance (Upper Garden Café)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the building.
  • There is step-free access via slope at the entrance.
  • The slight slope is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There is a single automatic door which opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 89cm.

Eating and Drinking (Upper Garden Café)

  • This is a café which serves hot and cold meals and snacks.
  • There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered.
  • Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
  • Menu types include: written wall menus.
  • Menus are easy to read (large clear font with contrasting colours).
  • The following are available here: drinking straws, takeaway cups, two handled cups, a portable card machine for payment, large-handled mugs and large-handled cutlery.

Route to (Toilets)

  • The toilets are located to the rear of the glasshouse.
    From the café exit, turn right proceed along the pathway to the rear of the café.
    At the rear of the café, turn left and follow the pathway past the shop.
    The toilets are located to the right.
    The pathways have a slight slope leading to the toilets.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac and bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Toilet with Adaptations (Right Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located at the rear of the glasshouse.
  • Access into the toilet is via a slight ramp/slope.
  • The slope is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • This toilet is approximately 145m from the café exit.
  • There is pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 90cm.
  • The door has a sliding bolt lock.
  • Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 146cm x 200cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the right of the seat but it is obstructed.
  • The lateral transfer space is 76cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a spatula flush on the transfer side.

  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There are hand dryers.
