Equipment and Resources to Borrow
- You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs and mountain trikes. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
- Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, binoculars, magnifying glass and torch.
- You can borrow these from Visitor Reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
- Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
Route to (Riding House Café)
- Exit Visitor Reception and head right.
Turn left into the Top Garden.
Follow the path to the left, then to the right when it turns towards the house.
Continue into the Walled Garden.
Turn left at the centre of the Walled Garden, then right on exiting the Walled Garden.
Follow the path towards the house, then take the turning on the left towards the Riding House.
The entrance to the Riding House Tearoom is to the left. - The route to the area is step-free level.
- Path surfaces along the route are tarmac and bonded gravel.
- The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
Entrance
- The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the building.
- There is step-free level access at the entrance.
- There is a single manual door which is permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 87cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of less than 1.5cm.
Eating and Drinking
- This is a café which serves hot and cold snacks.
- There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered.
- Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
- Menu types include: written wall menus.
- Menus are easy to read (large clear font with contrasting colours).
- The following are available here: drinking straws, takeaway cups and a portable card machine for payment.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
- There is background noise here which varies, depending on the time of day.
- There is a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
- The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
- There is a counter over 85cm high without a tray rail.
- The counter is 90cm high.
- There is not a section of the counter at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.

Lift (To First Floor Seating Area)
- This lift is a platform lift.
- The floors which are accessible by this lift are G, 1.
- Externally the lift has: a door with a high colour contrast to the surroundings, buttons with a high colour contrast to the surroundings, controls at a suitable height for a wheelchair user and tactile markings.
- The lift does have a recommended turning space (150cm x 150cm) in front of it.
- The lift door opening width is 81cm.
- The dimensions of the lift are 95cm x 137cm.
- Internally the lift has: a separate door to exit, controls at a suitable height for a wheelchair user, Braille markings, tactile markings, buttons with a low colour contrast to the surroundings and a visual floor indicator.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
Stairs (To First Floor Seating Area)
- The floors which are accessible by stairs are G, 1.
- There are 16 steps between floors.
- The steps are clearly marked with handrails on both sides.
- The highest step is 16cm high.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
Picnic Area
- The following information describes the picnic area located in front of the cafe.
- There is step-free level access into the area.
- There are tables.
- No chairs have armrests on both sides.
- Adapted picnic tables are not available.
- The standard height for the underside of picnic tables is 73cm.
- The following furniture is permanently fixed: all of the tables.
- There is step-free level access around some of the area.
- The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
- Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to gravel.
Entrance (Toilet Block)
- The entrance surveyed is located to the right of the Riding House Café.
- There is step-free access via slope at the entrance.
- The steep slope is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
- There is a single manual door which is permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 80cm.
Toilet with Adaptations (Ambulant - Left Hand Transfer)
- This toilet is located in the toilet block to the right of the café, straight ahead from the toilet block entrance.
- There is step-free level access into the toilet.
- This toilet is approximately 2m from the toilet block entrance.
- There is pictorial signage on or near the door.
- The door is manual, opens outwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
- The width of the toilet door opening is 86cm.
- The door has a lever twist lock.
- Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
- The dimensions of the cubicle are 138cm x 202cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
- There is a lateral transfer space to the left of the seat.
- The lateral transfer space is 101cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
- There is a spatula flush on the non transfer side.
- The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the door, a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side, a vertical grab rail on the transfer side and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.
