Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • You can borrow these from the garden centre. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.

Route to (the Stableyard Café)

  • From the car park, cross the wooden bridge directly ahead, go straight on, through the gate, and turn right. The stableyard is on the left.
    Go through the arch and the café is at the rear of the courtyard on the right.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are gravel, cobbles, paving stones, bonded gravel and wood.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Entrance (Main)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the building.
  • There is step-free access via slope at the entrance.
  • The slight slope is over 150cm wide.
  • There is a single manual door which is permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 109cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of more than 1.5cm.

Entrance (Seating Area)

  • The entrance surveyed is located on the right of the stableyard.
  • There is step-free access via slope at the entrance.
  • The slight slope is over 150cm wide.
  • There is a single manual door which is permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 152cm.

Eating and Drinking

  • This is a café which serves hot and cold snacks.
  • There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered.
  • Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
  • Menu types include: counter menus.
  • Menus are easy to read (large clear font with contrasting colours).
  • The following are available here: drinking straws, takeaway cups, two handled cups, easy grip cutlery and a portable card machine for payment.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
  • There is a hearing assistance system which is not signed.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested, however it was not working at the time of the survey.
  • There is a counter over 85cm high without a tray rail.
  • The counter is 89cm high.
  • There is not a section of the counter at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • There is step-free level access around the seating area.
  • There are coffee tables, tables, long tables, armchairs and chairs without armrests available in the seating area.
  • The seating area does not have: a priority table.
  • There are some tables which are at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The surface height of the tables is 72cm.
  • Flooring in the area is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to uneven paving/tiles.

Entrance (Stableyard Toilet Block - Toilet with Adaptations, Female and Parent and Baby Room)

  • The entrance surveyed is located to the right of the stableyard.
  • There is step-free access via slope at the entrance.
  • The slight slope is over 150cm wide.
  • There is a single manual door which is permanently open.

Entrance (Stableyard Toilet Block - Male)

  • The entrance surveyed is located to the left of the stableyard.
  • There is step-free access via slope at the entrance.
  • The slight slope is over 150cm wide.
  • There is a single manual door which is permanently open.

Toilet with Adaptations (Stableyard - Ambulant - Left Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located on the right as you enter the stableyard.
  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • There is pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 81cm.
  • The door has a lever twist lock.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 149cm x 224cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the left of the seat but it is obstructed.
  • The lateral transfer space is 78cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a lever flush on the non transfer side.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the door, a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side, a vertical grab rail on the transfer side and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.

  • Lighting levels are bright.
  • There are hand dryers.

Parent and Baby Room / Baby Feeding Room (Stableyard)

  • There is step-free level access into the room.
  • The door is manual, opens inwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 71cm.
  • Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
  • The height of the baby change table is 82cm.
  • The wash basin tap type is push.
  • There is no seating available in the room.
  • There is a toilet in the parent and baby room.
  • Waste bins include: a nappy bin.

Picnic Area

  • The following information describes the picnic area located at the rear of the stableyard.
  • Access into the area is via a slight ramp/slope.
  • The slope is between 75cm and 150cm wide.
  • There are picnic tables.
  • No chairs have armrests on both sides.
  • Adapted picnic tables are available.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the lowest picnic table is 72cm.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the highest picnic table is 75cm.
  • The standard height for the underside of picnic tables is 82cm.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: all of the chairs and all of the tables.
  • There is step-free level access around the area.
  • The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to loose chippings and bark chippings.
