Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.

Route to (the Snuff Mill Children and Young People Hub)

  • From the car park, cross the wooden bridge directly ahead, go straight on, through the gate, and turn right. The Snuff Mill Children and Young People Hub is directly ahead.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac, gravel, paving stones, bonded gravel and wood.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Entrance

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the building.
  • There is step-free access via slope at the entrance.
  • The slight slope is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • This entrance has an intercom and a key fob reader.
  • Features not positioned at a suitable height for a wheelchair user include: the intercom and the key fob reader.
  • There are double manual doors (with one door locked) which open towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 79cm.
  • There is a second set of manual doors (with one door locked) which open away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 77cm.
  • There are white gates at the entrance to the mill which are permanently held open during opening times and have a width of 200cm.
    This area may only be accessed by pre-booked groups.

Attraction / Exhibit

  • The majority of walkway widths are between 120cm and 180cm.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
  • Exhibit information includes the following formats: information board.
  • The exhibits do not have hearing assistance systems.

  • The steps are clearly marked with handrails on both sides.
  • The highest step is 18cm high.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.

Toilet with Adaptations (Snuff Mill - Accessible - Right Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located to the right as you face the entrance.
  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • This toilet is approximately 1m from the entrance.
  • There is pictorial signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 83cm.
  • The door has a lever twist lock.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 174cm x 304cm and it has a turning space of at least 150cm x 150cm.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the right of the seat but it is obstructed.
  • The lateral transfer space is 90cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a lever flush on the transfer side.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side, a vertical grab rail on the transfer side and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.
  • There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.

  • These toilets are inside the mill and can only be accessed if a visitor is part of a pre-booked activity group, not by the general public.
