Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, binoculars and accessible maps.
  • You can borrow these from visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.

Route to (the Woodland)

  • Exit visitor reception via the main entrance and immediately take a left.
    Follow the path down a slight slope for approximately 10 metres before joining a bridge.
    Here you have access to the woodland and multiple walking trails.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are concrete, gravel and wood.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Outdoor Spaces

  • This information is for the access point located to the right of the visitor reception building.
  • Access into the area is via a steep ramp/slope.
  • The slope is over 150cm wide.
  • There is open access at the surveyed access point.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: concrete or tarmac, grass and gravel.
  • Footpaths are available in some of the outdoor space.
  • The majority of the paths are not wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is step-free level access around some of the area.
  • There are steep ramps/slopes without handrails in the main areas.
  • Throughout the outdoor space there are multiple steep slopes to overcome.
  • There are some bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.

Hikes and Trails (Nuthatch Trail)

  • The trail is approximately 1.5 miles long.
  • The trail is a figure of either shape.
    Starting by turning right as you exit the bridge across from visitor reception, you will follow a steep slope uphill for approximately 30 metres, taking a signed right turn.
    Follow the route back down a steep hill and walk along the side of the river.
    At the end of this level path you will have 15+ steps to overcome which bring you back onto the original path. This loop can be done in reverse, or the steps can be avoided by turning around and heading back up the steep slope.
    Once back down where you started the walk, you will take a right turn before reaching the bridge. This forms the second loop in the figure of eight shape.
    Finally, you will be back at the bridge.
  • The trail is open 24 hours.
  • None of the paths are lit at night.
  • The route includes the following surfaces: wood and mud.
  • Some of the route contains steep gradients, steps and very uneven surfaces.
  • These are found in the following areas: throughout the trail.
  • There are no alternative routes to avoid these areas.
  • The route is clearly signposted.
  • Seating is not available on the route.
  • There are no toilet facilities along the route.
