Equipment and Resources to Borrow (Main Visitor Reception)
- You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
- Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, activity sheets, soft toy and communication cards.
- You can borrow these from the main visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
- The gatehouse visitor reception is approximately 472 metres away from the main visitor reception.
An accessible shuttle is available to take visitors from the main visitor reception to the gatehouse visitor reception.
Route to (The Stables Tea-room)
- Turn left out of the main visitor reception.
Follow the slightly sloped path down towards the house.
Go through the gatehouse and follow the gravel path up a steep slope.
Take the path left in front of the house and go up a steep slope across the courtyard to the tea-room. - The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope and is step-free via a steep ramp/slope.
- Path surfaces along the route are tarmac, gravel and paving stones.
- The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is an accessible shuttle which can take visitors to this area.
- The shuttle goes as far as the gatehouse.
Entrance
- The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the building in the courtyard.
- There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
- The steep ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
- There are double manual doors which are permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 113cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of more than 1.5cm.
Eating and Drinking
- This is a tea room which serves hot and cold meals and snacks.
- There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered.
- Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
- Menu types include: written wall menus.
- Menus are easy to read (large clear font with contrasting colours).
- The following are available here: drinking straws, takeaway cups, two handled cups, takeaway cutlery, a portable card machine for payment and large-handled mugs.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
- There is no (or very little) background noise here.
- There is a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
- The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
- There is a counter over 85cm high with a tray rail.
- The counter is 100cm high.
- There is not a section of the counter at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.

- There is step-free level access around the area.
- The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
- Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to gravel.
Toilet with Adaptations (The Stables Tea-room - Accessible - Left Hand Transfer)
- This toilet is located behind the tea-room.
- Access into the toilet is via a slight ramp/slope.
- The slope is over 150cm wide.
- There is pictorial, written text and ‘Not All Disabilities Are Visible’ signage on or near the door.
- The door is manual, opens outwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
- The width of the toilet door opening is 96cm.
- The door has a locking handle (with a RADAR key to access).
- The dimensions of the cubicle are 189cm x 205cm and it has a turning space of at least 150cm x 150cm.
- There is a lateral transfer space to the left of the seat but it is obstructed.
- The lateral transfer space is 118cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
- There is a spatula flush on the non transfer side.
- The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the door, a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side, a vertical grab rail on the transfer side and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.

- The width of the widest cubicle door opening is 68cm.
- There is an ambulant cubicle available with horizontal grab rails on both sides and a vertical grab rail on the right.
- The wash basin tap type is sensor.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
- There are hand dryers.
- The ambulant cubicle is only available in the female toilets.
Parent and Baby Room / Baby Feeding Room (The Stables Tea-room)
- Access into the room is via a slight ramp/slope.
- The ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
- The door is manual, permanently held open and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
- The width of the door opening is 79cm.
- Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of more than 1.5cm.
- The height of the baby change table is 98cm.
- The wash basin tap type is twist/turn.
- There is a chair without armrests available in the room.
- Waste bins include: a nappy bin and a general waste bin without lid.
- There is a second entrance door that opens away from you to a width of 76cm.
