Summary
- View information about opening hours.
- The most accessible entrance has a slight ramp/slope, a steep ramp/slope and manual doors.
- This entrance is at the front of the house.
- There are 2 floors once inside.
- Other floors can be accessed via: stairs.
- There is step-free access to the ground floor only once inside.
- There is a member of staff available for help and assistance.
- Staff/volunteers can describe the layout and access around the site.
- The following are also available: seating and on site-transport.
- This site is not part of the Sunflower Lanyard Scheme.
- Toilet and changing facilities available include: accessible toilets and standard toilets.
- The toilet with adaptations for disabled people surveyed can be found to the left of the entrance to the house.
There is one toilet with adaptations in the each of the female and male standard toilets.
Only the female facility was surveyed as the male facility was out of use at the time of survey (March 2024). - The standard toilets surveyed can be found to the left of the entrance to the house.
Equipment and Resources to Borrow
- You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
- You can borrow these from the visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
- Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
Route to (the House)
- Turn right out the visitor reception exit and go towards the shop entrance.
Exit the shop, turn right, go across the stables courtyard and head towards a large open archway on the right.
Follow the gravel path to the end, the signs for the house and the house will be on the left at the end of the path. - The route to the area is step-free level.
- Path surfaces along the route are tarmac, concrete, gravel and cobbles.
- The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is an accessible shuttle which can take visitors to this area.
Entrance
- The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the house.
- There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
- The slight slope is over 150cm wide.
- There are double manual doors which are permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 134cm.
- There is a second manual door which opens away from you.
- The width of the opening is 128cm.
- There is a steep ramp between 75cm and 150cm wide beyond the entrance, with no handrails.
- The ramp is between the first and second set of doors.
Tour
- The tour is self-guided but volunteers/staff are available to provide additional information.
- The tour takes approximately 1 hour.
- There is stepped access along the tour route.
- There are doorways or openings used on the tour which are under 75cm wide.
- The majority of walkway widths are over 180cm.
- The tour can not be adapted to avoid inaccessible areas.
- There is no (or very little) background noise along the tour route.
- Tour information includes the following formats: information booklets.
- The tour does not have a hearing assistance system.
- There are bench seats and chairs without armrests at regular intervals along the tour.
- The following furniture is permanently fixed: some of the chairs.
- Some flooring along the tour route is smooth and even.
- Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet.
- Some of the flooring includes large repeating patterns in bold colours, which may look like steps or holes to some people.
- Lighting levels are low throughout the tour route.
Stairs (Up)
- The floors which are accessible by stairs are G, 1.
- There are more than 20 steps between floors.
- The steps are not clearly marked with a handrail on the left going up.
- The highest step is 16cm high.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
Steps (to Mezzanine Floor on First Floor)
- There are 8 steps.
- The steps are not clearly marked but there are handrails on both sides.
- Lighting levels are low.
Stairs (Down)
- The floors which are accessible by stairs are 1, G.
- There are more than 20 steps between floors.
- The steps are not clearly marked with a handrail on the right going down.
- The highest step is 14cm high.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
Toilet with Adaptations (House - Accessible - Left Hand Transfer - Female)
- This toilet is located to the left of the entrance to the house.
- There is step-free level access into the toilet.
- There is no signage on or near the door.
- The door is manual, opens outwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
- The width of the toilet door opening is 90cm.
- The door has a lever twist lock.
- The dimensions of the cubicle are 205cm x 183cm and it has a turning space of at least 150cm x 150cm.
- There is a lateral transfer space to the left of the seat but it is obstructed.
- The transfer space on the right as you face the toilet is 144cm.
- There is a spatula flush on the non transfer side.
- The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the door, a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side, a vertical grab rail on the transfer side and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.
- There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.
- The following fixtures can be reached from the toilet seat: toilet roll holder and wash basin.

- The width of the toilet door opening is 89cm.
- The door has a lever twist lock.
- Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
- The dimensions of the cubicle are 188cm x 206cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
- There is a lateral transfer space to the left of the seat.
- The lateral transfer space is 141cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
- There is a lever flush on the non transfer side.
- The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the door, a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side, a vertical grab rail on the transfer side and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.
- There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.
