Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders.

  • Canes and walking poles are also available to borrow free of charge.
    These can be borrowed from the visitor reception or the house.
    The visitor shuttle is stationed outside visitor reception, but can be summoned to the house, car park, chapel or garden by using the call point in the car park or by speaking to a member of staff or volunteer.

Route to (the Gift and Plant Shop)

  • From the visitor reception entrance go straight across the courtyard.
    The entrance is under the archway.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are cobbles.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Entrance

  • The entrance surveyed is located across from visitor reception, under the archway in the courtyard.
  • There is step-free access via lift at the entrance.
  • The slight slope is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There are double manual doors (with one door locked) which open away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 79cm.
  • There are 4 steps beyond the entrance, which are unmarked, with a handrail on the left going up.
  • The handrail covers all steps.
  • There is a lift which bypasses the steps.

Lift (Entrance)

  • This lift is a platform lift.
  • A member of staff needs to be notified for use of the lift.
  • The lift overcomes a small level change.
  • Externally the lift has: buttons with a medium colour contrast to the surroundings and controls at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift does have a recommended turning space (150cm x 150cm) in front of it.
  • The dimensions of the lift are 79cm x 115cm.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.

Shop

  • The majority of aisle widths are under 150cm.
  • All flooring in the shop is smooth and even.
  • There is step-free level access around some of the shop.
  • Access around the shop is via steps.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
  • Lighting levels are bright.
  • There is step-free level access to the counter.
  • The height of the counter is 92cm.
  • There is a low level counter at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The counter has a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
  • Services/facilities available in the shop include: a portable card machine for payment and a member of staff to provide assistance.

Steps (to Lower Ground Shop Area)

  • There are 9 steps.
  • The steps are not clearly marked but there are handrails on both sides.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
