Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

  • Canes and walking poles are also available to borrow free of charge.
    These can be borrowed from the visitor reception or the house.
    The visitor shuttle is stationed outside visitor reception, but can be summoned to the house, car park, chapel or garden by using the call point in the car park or by speaking to a member of staff or volunteer.

Route to (the Chapel)

  • Turn right out of the visitor reception through an archway, and take the first path on the right.
    Take the right path up a very steep slope and then turn right at the top.
    Continue on the gravel path through the kissing gate or large gate to the chapel on the left.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a very steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac, gravel and cobbles.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is a shuttle which can take visitors to this area, but wheelchair users will need to transfer into it.

Entrance

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the chapel.
  • There is stepped access at the entrance.
  • The steep slope is over 150cm wide.
  • There are 6 steps, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
  • Steps are split with a resting area.
  • Some of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
  • There is a single manual door (with a locked extension leaf) which opens away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 60cm.
  • There is a second manual door (with a locked extension leaf) which opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 57cm.
  • The sloped pathway to left by passes first 4 steps.

Event Space

  • There is step-free level access around some of the space.
  • There is stepped access to the bench seats on either side of the chapel and up to the altar.
  • Some flooring in the area is smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet (deep pile).
  • The majority of the flooring includes large repeating patterns in bold colours, which may look like steps or holes to some people.
  • Some of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
  • Lighting levels are low.
  • There are bench seats available in the space.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: all of the chairs.
  • The space does not have a hearing assistance system.
