Route to (Second Hand Bookshop)

  • Follow the path from the welcome point to the end and then turn right. Continue down the path to the fork. Take the path to the left Continue down the path to the West Wing shop entrance. Proceed through the shop to the staircase. Take the staircase to the basement level. Once at the bottom of the stairs, turn right and the bookshop is on the left.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are gravel and bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is an accessible shuttle which can take visitors to this area.

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs and cycles. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

  • You can borrow or hire the following mobility vehicles: off-road/all-terrain mobility scooters. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

  • There are 10 or more steps.
  • The steps are not clearly marked but there are handrails on both sides.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.

Shop (Second Hand Bookshop)

  • There is step-free level access into the shop.
  • The door is manual, permanently held open and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 84cm.
  • Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of less than 1.5cm.
  • The majority of aisle widths are over 150cm.
  • Flooring in the shop is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet.
  • There is step-free level access around the shop.
  • There is background noise here which varies, depending on the time of day.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • The counter does not have a hearing assistance system.
  • Books are paid for in cash using the box provided. Books can also be paid for using the card machine in the shop on the ground floor of the West Wing.

Toilet with Adaptations (Second Hand Bookshop - Ambulant - Left Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located on the basement floor of the West Wing.
  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • This toilet is approximately 19m from the West Wing shop entrance.
  • There is Braille, tactile, pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 79cm.
  • The door has a lever twist lock.
  • Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 146cm x 204cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the left of the seat but it is obstructed.
  • The lateral transfer space is 79cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a spatula flush on the transfer side.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side, a vertical grab rail on the transfer side and a vertical rail on the left side of the wash basin.
  • There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.
