  • This is an open air car park with a tarmac surface.
  • There are parking charges for all users.
  • There are clearly presented payment signs.
  • Maps and information boards are available.
  • There are 4 Blue Badge parking bays.
  • The dimensions of the designated Blue Badge parking bay(s) surveyed are 230cm x 460cm.
  • There is a hatched zone on one side and to the rear.
  • The hatched zone is under 120cm wide.
  • The nearest Blue Badge bay is 12m from the café entrance.
  • Obstacles from the car park include: uneven surfaces.
  • There are not parent and child parking bays available.
  • There is not a designated drop-off point.
  • There are 2 bays marked as electric vehicle charging bays, with dimensions of 230cm x 460cm, however, these do not have any connectors.
    There is limited parking at the top of the site, near to the fort, for visitors unable to walk up the path.

Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.

Route to (Hadrian's Wall)

  • Exit the car park and head towards the café.
    On the right of the café head through the archway and turn left.
    Go through the gate and follow the path towards Housesteads Fort.
    At the fort head up the hill keeping the fort on the right.
    At the top of the hill go through the gate, the wall is ahead and goes along to the left.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope and is step-free via a very steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac, gravel and grass.
  • The majority of the paths are not wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Outdoor Spaces

  • This information is for the access point located on the left side of Housesteads Fort, at the top of the hill.
  • Access into the area is via a step.
  • There is 1 step, which is unmarked, with no handrails.
  • There is a gate at the surveyed access point which opens towards you (pull).
  • The gate is not self-closing.
  • The following outdoor facilities are available: woodland and open countryside.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: block paving, compact earth, uncompacted earth and loose stones.
  • Footpaths are available in all of the outdoor spaces.
  • The majority of the paths are not wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no step-free level access around the area.
  • There are steep ramps/slopes with handrails and slight ramps/slopes without handrails in the main areas.
  • There are slight and steep slopes on the path at the side of Hadrian's Wall.
  • There are not any bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.
  • The paths have gates which may create obstacles for some users.

Hikes and Trails (Hadrian's Wall)

  • The hike is approximately 6 miles long.
  • Go through the access gate and turn left to follow Hadrian's Wall.
    There is a lower path which runs alongside the wall, up to the gate, which is more accessible.
    At the gate there is a step down and then the hike follows the side of the wall.
  • The hike is open 24 hours.
  • None of the paths are lit at night.
  • The route includes the following surfaces: loose chippings, grass and gravel.
  • Some of the route contains steep gradients and very uneven surfaces.
  • These are found in the following areas: the path alongside the wall has some steep gradients, and after the second gate the route becomes very uneven.
  • There are no alternative routes to avoid these areas.
  • The route is clearly signposted.
  • Seating is not available on the route.
  • There are no toilet facilities along the route.
