Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs and running buggies. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • You can borrow these from visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
  • A visitor shuttle is available to take people from the car park to the visitor reception.

Route to (the Top Garden)

  • Exit the visitor reception through the archway into the cobbled courtyard.
    Continue past the toilets and the shops to the rear of the house.
    Take the level path on the left, this is the middle path on the map.
    Follow this path until the end and take a very steep path on the left to the garden.
  • The route to the area is step-free level and is step-free via a very steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac, gravel and cobbles.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
  • The path to the Top Garden may not be suitable for a wheelchair user due to uneven surfaces and exposed tree roots.

Outdoor Spaces

  • This information is for the access point located at the far end of middle path.
  • Access into the area is via a very steep ramp/slope.
  • The slope is over 150cm wide.
  • There is open access at the surveyed access point.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: concrete or tarmac, grass and loose stones.
  • Footpaths are not available in all of the outdoor space.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is step-free level access around some of the area.
  • There are steep ramps/slopes without handrails in the main areas.
  • There are steep slopes throughout the area.
  • There are not any bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.
