- This toilet with adaptations for disabled people is approximately 1m from the museum side entrance.
- The standard toilets surveyed can be found at the rear of the Field Centre building.
- Visitors can borrow a photo album to view parts of the site that are inaccessible.
Equipment and Resources to Borrow
- You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
- Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: torch.
- You can borrow these from visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
- Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
Route to (the Workshop)
- As you leave visitor reception via the exit, immediately take a right, cross the gravelled mine yard for approximately 25 metres and the workshop will be on the left.
- The route to the area is step-free level.
- Path surfaces along the route are gravel.
- The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
Entrance (Workshop)
- The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the workshop.
- There is step-free level access at the entrance.
- There is a single manual door which is permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 247cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of more than 1.5cm.
Attraction / Exhibit (Workshop)
- The majority of walkway widths are over 180cm.
- There is no (or very little) background noise here.
- The exhibits do not have hearing assistance systems.
- There is step-free level access around the area.
- There are no seats available in the area.
- All flooring in the area is smooth and even.
- Lighting levels are low.
Route to (the Winding Shed)
- Leave visitor reception via the exit and cross the gravelled mine yard straight ahead for approximately 25 metres until you reach the Winding Shed.
You will cross over some old train tracks along the route. - The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
- Path surfaces along the route are gravel, grass and metal.
- The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
Entrance (Winding Shed)
- The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the Winding Shed.
- There is stepped access at the entrance.
- There is 1 step, which is unmarkedno handrails.
- The step is not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
- There is a single manual door which is permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 53cm.
Attraction / Exhibit (Winding Shed)
- The majority of walkway widths are under 120cm.
- There is no (or very little) background noise here.
- The exhibits do not have hearing assistance systems.
- There is step-free level access around some of the area.
- There are 3 steps to a platform area.
- There are no seats available in the area.
- All flooring in the area is smooth and even.

Route to (the Field Centre)
- Leave visitor reception via the exit and turn right.
Cross the gravelled mine yard for approximately 12 metres
The museum is on the right. - The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
- Path surfaces along the route are gravel, wood and rubber matting.
- The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
Entrance (Field Centre - Front)
- The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the museum.
- There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
- The slight ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
- There is a single manual door which is permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 88cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of more than 1.5cm.
Entrance (Field Centre - Side)
- The entrance surveyed is located on the far left hand side of the museum.
- There is step-free level access at the entrance.
- There is a single manual door which opens towards you.
- The width of the opening is 81cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of less than 1.5cm.
Attraction / Exhibit (Field Centre)
- The majority of walkway widths are between 120cm and 180cm.
- There is no (or very little) background noise here.
- Exhibit information includes the following formats: tactile, pictorial and interactive exhibits at a recommended height for wheelchair users (between 75cm - 120cm).
- The exhibits do not have hearing assistance systems.
- There is step-free level access around the area.
- There are coffee tables, sofas, bench seats and chairs without armrests available in the area.
- Flooring in the area is not smooth and even.
- Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet.
- Lighting levels are low in some areas.
Toilet with Adaptations (Field Centre - Ambulant - Right Hand Transfer)
- This toilet is located at the rear left of the museum.
- There is step-free level access into the toilet.
- This toilet is approximately 1m from the museum side entrance.
- There is pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
- The door is manual, opens outwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
- The width of the toilet door opening is 95cm.
- The door has a lever twist lock.
- The dimensions of the cubicle are 146cm x 210cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
- There is not a lateral transfer space next to the seat.
- There is a spatula flush on the right, but there is no transfer space.
- The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the left as you face the toilet, a vertical grab rail on the right as you face the toilet and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.
- There is a dropdown rail on the right as you face the seat.
- The following fixtures can be reached from the toilet seat: toilet roll holder, wash basin and soap dispenser.
- The following fixtures cannot be reached from the toilet seat: hand dryer.

- The male and female standard toilets were surveyed.
- The width of the widest cubicle door opening is 63cm.
- The wash basin tap type is lever mixer.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
- There are hand dryers.
Outdoor Spaces
- This information is for the access point located at the rear of visitor reception.
- There is step-free level access into the area.
- There is open access at the surveyed access point.
- The following outdoor facilities are available: a gravelled mine yard, picnic tables, waterfall, mining displays and a gold panning area.
- The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: grass and gravel.
- Footpaths are not available in all of the outdoor space.
- There is step-free level access around the area.
Exit
- The exit is located opposite the visitor reception, on the left hand side as you exit the gold mines area.
- There is step-free access via ramp at the exit.
- The slight ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
- There are double manual gates which are permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 121cm.
