Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs, a running buggy and mountain trikes. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • You can borrow these from the Information Centre. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
  • All mobility equipment is available to borrow free of charge.
    There is also a free shuttle bus that visitors can request to take them to the Conservatory Café or riverside.
    The shuttle bus is wheelchair accessible.
    There are securing clamps inside to secure wheelchairs.
    The shuttle bus has a working hearing loop.

Route to (Water Garden)

  • From the Information Centre, turn right and then left and continue up the path passing the Refreshment Kiosk.
    The entrance to the Water Garden is located immediately ahead.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are concrete and gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Outdoor Spaces (Water Garden)

  • This information is for the access point located along the wall, to the right of the Shop and Plant Centre.
  • Access into the area is via a slight ramp/slope.
  • The slope is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There is a gate at the surveyed access point which is permanently held open.
  • The gate is not self-closing.
  • The width of the gap is 104cm.
  • The following outdoor facilities are available: gardens.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: grass, gravel and loose stones.
  • Footpaths are available in all of the outdoor space.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is step-free level access around some of the area.
  • There are slight ramps/slopes without handrails and steep ramps/slopes without handrails in the main areas .
  • There are slight to steep slopes along the paths surrounding the pond area.
  • There are some bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.

Picnic Area (Water Garden)

  • The following information describes the picnic area located at the rear of the Water Garden.
  • Access into the area is via slight ramps/slopes.
  • The slope is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There are picnic tables.
  • No chairs have armrests on both sides.
  • Adapted picnic tables are available.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the lowest picnic table is 66cm.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the highest picnic table is 71cm.
  • The standard height for the underside of picnic tables is 74cm.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: all of the chairs.
  • There is no step-free level access around the area.
  • The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to grass.

Route to (Maze)

  • From the Information Centre, turn right and then left up the slight slope towards the entrance to the Water Garden.
    Enter via the Water Garden entrance and continue along the path to the left until you reach the Maze.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope and is step-free via a steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are concrete and gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Outdoor Spaces (Maze)

  • This information is for the access point located within the Water Garden, to the left as you enter.
  • There is step-free level access into the area.
  • There is a gate at the surveyed access point which is permanently held open.
  • The gate is not self-closing.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: concrete or tarmac and gravel.
  • Footpaths are available in all of the outdoor space.
