Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs, a running buggy and mountain trikes. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • You can borrow these from the Information Centre. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
  • All mobility equipment is available to borrow free of charge.
    There is also a free shuttle bus that visitors can request to take them to the Conservatory Café or riverside.
    The shuttle bus is wheelchair accessible.
    There are securing clamps inside to secure wheelchairs.
    The shuttle bus has a working hearing loop.

Route to (Doll's House Café, Storybook Play Den and Picnic Area)

  • From the Information Centre, turn right then left and continue ahead past the Refreshment Kiosk and through the entrance door into the Water Garden.
    Once in the Water Garden, continue straight and follow the path around the pond.
    At the rear of the pond, turn left and continue along the path and the Doll's House Café, Storybook Play Den and Picnic Area is located directly ahead.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are compact earth, concrete and bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Toilet with Adaptations (Doll's House Café - Left Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located to the left of the Doll's House Café, in a separate outbuilding.
  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • This toilet is approximately 10m from the Doll's House Café.
  • There is pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 86cm.
  • The door has a locking handle.
  • Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of more than 1.5cm.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 155cm x 214cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the left of the seat but it is obstructed.
  • The lateral transfer space is 62cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a spatula flush on the non transfer side.

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the rear of the café building.

  • There is a single manual door which opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 75cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of more than 1.5cm.

Entrance (Doll's House Café - Front Entrance)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the café building.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The steep ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There is a single manual door which opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 87cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of more than 1.5cm.

Eating and Drinking (Doll's House Café)

  • This is a café which serves hot and cold drinks and snacks.
  • There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered.
  • Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
  • Menu types include: written wall menus and menu boards.
  • Menus are not easy to read (unclear font with poorly contrasting colours).
  • The following are available here: drinking straws, takeaway cups, takeaway cutlery and a portable card machine for payment.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
  • There is a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
  • There is a counter over 85cm high without a tray rail.
  • The counter is 89cm high.
  • There is not a section of the counter at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • All flooring in the area is smooth and even.
  • Some of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
  • There is no seating area within the café.

Picnic Area

  • The following information describes the picnic area located in front and behind the Doll's House Café.
  • There is step-free level access into the area.
  • There is 1 step, which is unmarked, with no handrails.
  • There are picnic tables.
  • No chairs have armrests on both sides.
  • Adapted picnic tables are not available.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the lowest picnic table is 68cm.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the highest picnic table is 68cm.
  • The standard height for the underside of picnic tables is 73cm.
  • The surface height of the lowest table is 24cm.
  • The surface height of the highest table is 24cm.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: all of the chairs and some of the tables.
  • There is step-free level access around the area.
  • The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to compacted earth and loose chippings.
  • To enter the Doll's House Café, Storybook Play Den and Picnic Area is via a gated entrance at the rear of the Water Garden.
    The entrance gate opens towards you, is permanently held open and 164cm wide.
    There is a slight slope at this access point.

Outdoor Spaces (Storybook Play Den)

  • This information is for the access point located to the left as you enter the Doll's House Café, Storybook Play Den and Picnic Area.
  • Access into the area is via a slight ramp/slope.
  • The slope is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There is open access at the surveyed access point.
  • The following outdoor facilities are available: a playground with play equipment.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: loose chippings, wood bark and loose stones.
  • Footpaths are available in some of the outdoor space.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is step-free level access around some of the area.
  • There are less than 3 steps without handrails in the main areas .
  • There is 1 deep step to access the play area from the main path. Alternatively there is a slight slope and a shallow step at the entrance into the play area.
  • There are bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.
  • Playground View
    • There is a route around the play equipment which is not firm and even, but is over 150cm wide.
    • The play equipment is in easy reach for seated and standing users, and users of different heights.
    • The following play experiences are available: sliding, climbing, balancing, viewing and social play.
