  • This site has a car park.
  • The vehicle route from the main road to the car park includes: uneven surfaces, potholes and speed bumps.
  • This is an open air car park with a tarmac, gravel and compacted gravel surface.
  • Parking is free for National Trust members and Blue Badge holders, but charges apply for all other visitors.
  • There are not clearly presented payment signs.
  • Maps and information boards are available.
  • There are more than 10 Blue Badge parking bays.
  • The dimensions of the designated Blue Badge parking bay(s) surveyed are 250cm x 600cm.
  • There is a hatched zone on one side but not to the rear.
  • The hatched zone is under 120cm wide.

Route to (the Visitor Centre)

  • Proceed directly ahead from the car park down the slope, go across the pedestrian crossing on the left and the visitor centre is directly ahead.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope and is step-free via a steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac and bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders and fidget toys.
  • You can borrow these from the visitor centre. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
  • Sensory packs also include anxiety control items, easy reading materials and materials in Braille.
    There are tactile resources which reflect the collection available on request from the house.

Visitor Centre

  • There is step-free level access into the area.
  • The door is manual, opens inwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 112cm.
  • Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
  • There is step-free level access around the visitor centre.
  • The majority of aisle widths are over 150cm.
  • There is room for wheelchair users to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm) throughout the visitor centre.
  • Some of the flooring is smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet.
  • There is step-free level access to the counter.
  • The height of the counter is 90cm.
  • There is a low level section at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The counter is placed in front of a patterned background.
  • The counter has a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
  • There are tables and chairs without armrests available in the visitor centre.
  • Services/facilities available include: a portable card machine for payment and a member of staff to provide assistance.

Toilet with Adaptations (Visitor Centre - Ambulant - Right Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located to the left of the visitor centre entrance.

  • There is pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 93cm.
  • The door has a locking handle.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of less than 1.5cm.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 148cm x 264cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the right of the seat but it is obstructed.
  • The lateral transfer space is 70cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a spatula flush on the transfer side.
