Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders and fidget toys.
  • You can borrow these from the visitor centre. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
  • Sensory packs also include anxiety control items, easy reading materials and materials in Braille.
    There are tactile resources which reflect the collection available on request from the house.

Route to (the Estate)

  • Proceed towards the house from the visitor centre and the path to the estate is on the left.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope and is step-free via a steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are gravel, muddy, paving stones and bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are not wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
  • At the time of the survey (February 2024), there was no access to the play areas and woodland from the garden due to essential works to a bridge.
    During this time, visitors can access these areas via the path at the rear of the overflow car park.

Outdoor Spaces

  • This information is for the access point located to the rear of the visitor centre.
  • Access into the area is via slight ramps/slopes and a steep ramp/slope.
  • The slope is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There is a gate at the surveyed access point which is permanently held open.
  • The width of the gap is 90cm.
  • The following outdoor facilities are available: parkland and woodland.
  • The outdoor facilities also include: a play area.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: grass, compact earth and uncompacted earth.
  • Footpaths are available in some of the outdoor spaces.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is step-free level access around some of the area.
  • There are slight ramps/slopes without handrails and steep ramps/slopes without handrails in the main areas.
  • There are slight and steep slopes throughout the woodland area.
  • There are some bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.
  • The paths have easy open gates which may create obstacles for some users.
  • Playground View
    • There is a fenced play area with an entrance over 100cm wide.
    • There is a route around the play equipment which is not firm and even, but is over 150cm wide.
    • The following play experiences are available: swinging, sliding, rocking, climbing, balancing and viewing.
    • At the time of the survey (February 2024), there was no access to the play areas and woodland from the garden due to essential works to a bridge.
      During this time, visitors can access these areas via the path at the rear of the overflow car park.

Hikes and Trails (Estate Walk)

  • The walk is approximately 2.5 miles.
  • The walk begins on the path to the right of the Visitors Centre.
    At the first opportunity, turn left down a path, the old swimming pool will be on your right-hand side.
    Pass through a gate by the swings and follow the grass path across the field to the far side.
    Go through a second gate to The Old Quarry.
    Turn either left or right.
    The walk comprises of a figure of 8 shape, bringing you back to The Old Quarry.
    Along the route you will find the Bomb Crater, Canadian Camp and Tree House.
  • The walk is not open 24 hours.
  • None of the paths are lit at night.
  • The route includes the following surfaces: grass and mud.
  • Some of the route contains steep gradients, steps and very uneven surfaces.
  • These are found in the following areas: throughout the walk.
  • There are no alternative routes to avoid these areas.
  • The route is clearly signposted.
  • Seating is available on the route.
  • There are no toilet facilities along the route.
