Route to (the Shop and Victorian Kitchen)

  • From the Visitor Centre, cross the road using the dropped kerbs and enter the main property gate.
    There is a slight slope either side of the road.
    Continue 10m along the gravel path.
    From here, either take the shuttle bus or continue on the gravel path to the House.
    From the House, turn left and continue to the Victorian Kitchen and Shop on the right.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac, gravel and bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is a shuttle which can take visitors to this area, but wheelchair users will need to transfer into it.

Entrance

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the house, on the far left side.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The slight ramp is under 75cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There are double manual doors (with one door locked) which is permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 84cm.
  • There is a second manual door which is permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 107cm.
  • There are 5 steps beyond the entrance, which are clearly marked, with a handrail on the left going up.
  • The handrail covers all steps.
  • Some of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).

Entrance (Accessible)

  • The entrance surveyed is located on the left side of the house, next to the shop and Victorian kitchen main entrance.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The slight ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • The ramp overcomes the step.
  • Please contact the shop staff via the bell at the shops and kitchens main entrance for use of the portable ramp.
  • There is 1 step, which is unmarkedno handrails.
  • This entrance has a bell.
  • Features at a suitable height for a wheelchair user include: the bell.
  • There are double manual doors which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 115cm.

Shop

  • There is step-free level access into the shop.
  • The door is manual, permanently held open and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 85cm.
  • Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
  • The majority of aisle widths are under 150cm.
  • All flooring in the shop is smooth and even.
  • There is step-free level access around the shop.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There is step-free level access to the counter.
  • The height of the counter is 91cm.
  • There is not a low level counter at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The counter has windows, TVs, glazed screens or mirrors which could adversely affect the ability of someone to lip read.
