Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs and mountain trikes. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, sunglasses, binoculars, magnifying glass, activity sheets and soft toy.
  • You can borrow these from the visitor centre. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.

Route to (Outdoor Centre and Trading Post)

  • From the reception building, turn left and follow the walled path to the open grassed area.
    Take the left fork before the church and follow the path until the Outdoor Centre is signed on the left.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope and is step-free via a steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is an accessible shuttle which can take visitors to this area.

Toilet with Adaptations (Ambulant - Right Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located in the toilet block behind the Outdoor Centre.
  • Access into the toilet is via a slight ramp/slope.
  • The ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • This toilet is approximately 10m from the Outdoor Centre entrance.
  • There is pictorial signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 90cm.
  • The door has a locking handle.
  • Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of less than 1.5cm.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 237cm x 247cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the right of the seat.
  • The lateral transfer space is 190cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a lever flush on the transfer side.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the door, a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side, a vertical grab rail on the transfer side and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.
  • There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.

  • The ramp is slight and between 75cm and 150cm wide.
  • The ramp does not have handrails.
  • There are 2 steps.
  • The steps are not clearly marked with no handrails.
  • The ramp overcomes the steps.

Picnic Area

  • The following information describes the picnic area located in front of the Trading Post.
  • There is step-free level access into the area.
  • There are picnic tables.
  • No chairs have armrests on both sides.
  • Adapted picnic tables are not available.
  • The distance between the floor and the underside of the lowest picnic table is 76cm.
  • The standard height for the underside of picnic tables is 78cm.
  • There is step-free level access around the area.
  • The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to uneven floorboards.

Shop (Outdoor Centre)

  • There is step-free level access into the shop.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 100cm.
  • Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of less than 1.5cm.
  • The majority of aisle widths are over 150cm.
  • Flooring in the shop is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to uneven floorboards.
  • There is step-free level access around the shop.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There is step-free level access to the counter.

  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to uneven floorboards.
  • There is step-free level access around the shop.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
