Equipment and Resources to Borrow
- You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair and cycles. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
- Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: accessible maps.

- The cycles that can be borrowed are children's balance bikes.
Route to (the Manor House)
- From the visitor reception follow the pathway around to the right, proceed ahead passing the second-hand bookshop on the left and go towards the gatehouse on the right. Then turn right.
Continue ahead through the gatehouse archway and down a slope towards the main entrance. - The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
- Path surfaces along the route are tarmac, gravel and paving stones.
- The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is no accessible shuttle to this area.
- For the alternative entrance follow the pathway around to the right towards the rear of the house.
Entrance (Main)
- The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the house.
- There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
- The steep portable ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
- The ramp overcomes the steps.
- Please contact a volunteer at the entrance for use of the portable ramp.
- There are 2 steps, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
- Steps are split with a resting area.
- The handrails do not cover all steps.
- Some of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
- There are double manual doors which are permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 134cm.
Entrance (Alternative)
- The entrance surveyed is located at the rear of the house.
- There is step-free level access at the entrance.
- There is a single manual door which opens away from you.
- The width of the opening is 90cm.
- This door is also used as the exit door for most visitors.
Entrance (The Cider Room - Virtual Tour)
- The entrance surveyed is located to the left of the alternative entrance.
- There is step-free level access at the entrance.
- There are double manual doors (with one door locked) which open towards you.
- The width of the opening is 106cm.
Tour
- The tour is self-guided but volunteers/staff are available to provide additional information.
- The tour takes approximately 30 minutes.
- There is stepped access along the tour route.
- There are doorways or openings used on the tour which are under 75cm wide.
- The majority of walkway widths are between 120cm and 180cm.
- The tour can not be adapted to avoid inaccessible areas.
- Areas with stepped access only can be experienced by visitors via a virtual tour.
- There is no (or very little) background noise along the tour route.
- Tour information includes the following formats: information booklets, Braille, television/screen and audio description.
- Floor plans/maps are available for the tour route.
- The tour does not have a hearing assistance system.
- There are armchairs, sofas and a mixture of chairs with and without armrests at regular intervals along the tour.
- Some flooring along the tour route is smooth and even.
- Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet and uneven floorboards.
- Some of the flooring includes large repeating patterns in bold colours, which may look like steps or holes to some people.
- Some of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
- Lighting levels are varied throughout the tour route.
- Visitors are free to sit on seating that doesn't display a spray of lavender.
There are various rooms which have either steps or short slopes to enter.
Visitors can view the downstairs Lutley's Room (Parlour) and the Great Hall via the main entrance.
To view the kitchen, sitting room and buttery (which has 2 deep steps) you can use the alternative entrance.
In the virtual tour room, there is a height adjustable desk which has a lowest height of 87cm.
Stairs (Great Hall to Minstrels Gallery)
- The floors which are accessible by stairs are G, 1.
- There are 13 steps between floors.
- The steps are not clearly marked with handrails on both sides.
- The highest step is 22cm high.
- The stairs are open.
- Lighting levels are varied.
Stairs (Bucklers Landing to Kitchen and Exit Lobby)
- The floors which are accessible by stairs are 1, G.
- There are 13 steps between floors.
- The steps are not clearly marked with a handrail on the left going down.
- The highest step is 22cm high.
- This is a spiral staircase and will be narrower in some areas.
- Lighting levels are varied.
Exit
- The exit is located to the rear of the house, off the kitchen lobby area.
- There is step-free level access at the exit.
- There is a single manual door which opens towards you.
- The width of the opening is 90cm.
- The exit door is also the accessible entrance.
