Route to (the Visitor Reception)

  • Leave the car park and pass to the left of the Pavilion Tea Room.
    Follow the path downhill, which becomes increasingly steep until it passes under the road via an underpass.
    Turn left at the other side, go through the gate and visitor reception will be on the right.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac, gravel and paving stones.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs and a mountain trike. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • You can borrow these from visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
  • A wheeled walker is also available from the car park.

Visitor Reception

  • Access into the area is via a slight ramp/slope.

  • The door is automatic, opens outwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.

  • The counter has windows, TVs, glazed screens or mirrors which could adversely affect the ability of someone to lip read.

  • The ramp overcomes the steps.
  • There are 6 steps beyond the exit, which are unmarked, with handrails on both sides.
  • Steps are split with a resting area.
  • The handrails cover all steps.
  • All steps at the recommended height of between 15cm and 18cm.

Exit (from Garden)

  • The exit is located along the wall after exiting from visitor reception.
  • There is step-free access via slope at the exit.
  • The slight slope is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There are double manual gates (with one gate locked) which open away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 92cm.

Ramp or Slope and Steps (to Toilets on Far Side of Garden Centre)

  • The ramp is steep and between 75cm and 150cm wide.
  • The ramp has handrails on both sides.
  • There are 6 steps.
  • The steps are not clearly marked with handrails on both sides.
  • The ramp overcomes the steps.

Toilet with Adaptations (Far Side of Garden Centre - Ambulant - Left Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located on the opposite side of the garden centre.
  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • There is pictorial, written text and ‘Not All Disabilities Are Visible’ signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 94cm.
  • The door has a locking handle.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of more than 1.5cm.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 142cm x 213cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the left of the seat but it is obstructed.
  • The lateral transfer space is 75cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a spatula flush on the non transfer side.
