Route to (Camellia House)

  • From the visitor centre, proceed through the gate and continue straight ahead for approximately 50m.
    Proceed up the steps to the right.
    There are 10 steps at a height of 16cm.
    The handrail is on the first set of steps to the terrace only, and not the second set that goes into the Camellia House.
    Follow the pathway ahead to the Camellia House.
  • Path surfaces along the route are gravel and bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Entrance (Camellia House)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the building.
  • There is stepped access at the entrance.
  • There are 4 steps, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
  • Steps are split with a resting area.
  • Some of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
  • There is a single manual door which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 100cm.

Shop (Second Hand Book Shop)

  • There is step-free level access into the shop.
  • The door is manual, permanently held open and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 90cm.
  • Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
  • The majority of aisle widths are under 150cm.
  • Some flooring in the shop is smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet.
  • There is step-free level access around the shop.
  • There is background noise here.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There is step-free level access to the counter.
  • The height of the counter is 72cm.
  • The counter has windows, TVs, glazed screens or mirrors which could adversely affect the ability of someone to lip read.
  • The counter has a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system could not be tested at the time of the survey.
  • Services/facilities available in the shop include: a portable card machine for payment.

Eating and Drinking (Camellia Café)

  • This is a café which serves hot and cold drinks, cakes and ice cream.
  • There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered.
  • Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
  • Menu types include: written wall menus.
  • Menus are easy to read (large clear font with contrasting colours).

Lounge (Drawing Room)

  • There is step-free level access into the room.
  • The door is manual, permanently held open and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the opening is 90cm.
  • Internally the door has a medium colour contrast.
  • Facilities/features in the lounge/living areas include; chairs with armrests, chairs without armrests and a table.
  • There is a seat at a suitable height for a wheelchair user to transfer.
  • The surface height of the table is 73cm.
  • There is room for wheelchair users to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm) in the majority of the room.
  • Flooring in the area is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to uneven floorboards.
  • The colour contrast between the floor and walls in the lounge/living areas is medium.
  • The lighting levels in the lounge/living areas are moderate to good.
