Access Guide
Summary
- View information about opening hours.
- The most accessible entrance has step-free level access and a gate.
- This entrance is off of the path after passing the kitchen garden.

Equipment and Resources to Borrow
- You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
- Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, sunglasses, activity sheets and soft toy.
- You can borrow these from visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
- Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.
Route to (the Walled Garden)
- Leave the visitor reception area and go up the path towards the shop with the accessible car park on the left.
At the T-junction turn right.
Continue for approximately 70 metres until you reach a path on the right.
Take that path and pass the kitchen garden.
The walled garden entrance will then be on the left. - The route to the area is step-free level.
- Path surfaces along the route are tarmac and concrete.
- The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is a shuttle which can take visitors to this area, but wheelchair users will need to transfer into it.
Outdoor Spaces
- There is step-free level access into the area.
- The access points to the area are located off of the path after passing the kitchen garden, over the moat and also within the south lawn.
- There is a gate at the surveyed access point which is permanently held open.
- The width of the gap is 84cm.
- The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: grass and block paving.
- Footpaths are available in all of the outdoor spaces.
- The majority of the paths are not wide enough for wheelchair users.
- There is step-free level access around some of the area.
- There are slight ramps/slopes without handrails in the main areas.
- There are slight gradients leading to the south lawn.
- There are some bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.
- The paths have gates which may create obstacles for some users.
- All gates within the garden are permanently held open.
Entrance (Strode House)
- The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the building.
- There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
- The slight ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
- There are double manual doors which are permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 112cm.
- There is a second manual door which is permanently open.
- The width of the opening is 101cm.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of more than 1.5cm.
Tour (Strode House)
- The tour is self-guided but volunteers/staff are available to provide additional information.
- The tour takes approximately 30 minutes.
- There is step-free level access throughout the tour.
- The majority of walkway widths are over 180cm.
- There is background noise along the tour route.
- Tour information includes the following formats: pictorial, information board, television/screen and audio description.
- The tour does not have a hearing assistance system.
- There are sofas and a mixture of chairs with and without armrests at regular intervals along the tour.
- The following furniture is permanently fixed: some of the chairs.
- Flooring along the tour route is not smooth and even.
- Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet and uneven floorboards.
- Some of the flooring includes large repeating patterns in bold colours, which may look like steps or holes to some people.
- Some of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good throughout the tour route.
Toilet with Adaptations (Strode House - Ambulant - Right Hand Transfer)
- This toilet is located to the right after the second entrance door.
- There is step-free level access into the toilet.
- This toilet is approximately 20m from the entrance.
- There is pictorial and written text signage on or near the door.
- The door is manual, opens inwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
- The width of the toilet door opening is 82cm.
- The door has a sliding bolt lock.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of less than 1.5cm.
- The dimensions of the cubicle are 245cm x 350cm and it has a turning space of at least 150cm x 150cm.
- There is a lateral transfer space to the right of the seat but it is obstructed.
- The lateral transfer space is 97cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
- There is a lever flush on the transfer side.
- The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side and a vertical rail on the right side of the wash basin.
- There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.
- The following fixtures cannot be reached from the toilet seat: toilet roll holder, wash basin, soap dispenser, towel dispenser and hand dryer.
- The height of the toilet seat above floor level is 42cm.
- The height of the toilet roll holder is 96cm.
- The wash basin tap type is lever.
- The height of the wash basin is 87cm.
- The height of the soap dispenser is 117cm.
- The height of the towel dispenser is 116cm.
- The height of the hand dryer is 95cm.
- The height of the baby change is 90cm.
- There is no emergency alarm.
- There is not a shelf.
- The cubicle has: a waste bin without lid, a nappy/incontinence items bin and a sanitary bin.
- The cubicle does not have a full length mirror and coat hooks.
- The following have a high colour contrast with their surroundings: the floor and the internal door.
- The following have a less clear colour contrast with their surroundings: the toilet seat, the dropdown rail and all grab rails.
- Lighting levels are low.
Standard Toilet (Strode House - Female)
- There is step-free level access into the toilet.
- The door is manual, opens inwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
- The width of the door opening is 90cm.
- Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
- There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of less than 1.5cm.
- The width of the widest cubicle door opening is 62cm.
- The wash basin tap type is twist/turn.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
- There are hand dryers.
Standard Toilet (Strode House - Male)
- There is step-free level access into the toilet.
- The door is manual, opens inwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
- The width of the door opening is 84cm.
- Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
- The width of the widest cubicle door opening is 79cm.
- The wash basin tap type is twist/turn.
- Lighting levels are moderate to good.
- There are hand dryers.
