Parking (Main Car Park)

Route to (Visitor Reception)

  • The visitor reception can be found in the accessible car park area.
    From the main car park, exit via the pedestrian path to the left of the car park entrance.
    Follow the path with the grass on your left.
    The visitor reception will be on the left after approximately 200 metres.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac, gravel, paving stones and wood.
  • The majority of the paths are not wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is a shuttle which can take visitors to this area, but wheelchair users will need to transfer into it.

Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: a manual wheelchair. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, sunglasses, activity sheets and soft toy.
  • You can borrow these from visitor reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.

Visitor Reception

  • Access into the area is via a very steep ramp/slope.
  • The ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • The door is manual, permanently held open and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 55cm.
  • Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the doorway with a height of more than 1.5cm.
  • There is step-free level access around the area.
  • The majority of aisle widths are over 150cm.
  • There is room for wheelchair users to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm) throughout the area.
  • The flooring is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet.
  • There is step-free level access to the counter.
  • The height of the counter is 76cm.
  • The counter has windows, TVs, glazed screens or mirrors which could adversely affect the ability of someone to lip read.
  • The counter has a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested and working at the time of the survey.
  • Services/facilities available include: a portable card machine for payment and a member of staff to provide assistance.

Entrance

  • There are double manual doors which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 113cm.

Tour

  • The tour is self-guided but volunteers/staff are available to provide additional information.
  • There is step-free level access throughout the tour.
  • The majority of walkway widths are over 180cm.
  • The tour can be adapted to avoid inaccessible areas.
  • There is background noise along the tour route.
  • Tour information includes the following formats: pictorial, information board, television/screen and audio description.
  • The tour does not have a hearing assistance system.
  • There are sofas and a mixture of chairs with and without armrests at regular intervals along the tour.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: some of the chairs.
  • Flooring along the tour route is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet and uneven floorboards.
  • Lighting levels are varied throughout the tour route.

Toilet with Adaptations

  • The door is manual, opens inwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.

  • The door has a sliding bolt lock.
  • Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 247cm x 356cm and it has a turning space of at least 150cm x 150cm.
  • There are lateral transfer spaces on both sides of the seat.
  • The transfer space on the left as you face the toilet is 98cm.
  • The transfer space on the right as you face the toilet is 147cm.
  • There is a lever flush on the right transfer side.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the transfer side and a vertical rail on the right side of the wash basin.

  • The following fixtures can be reached from the toilet seat: toilet roll holder.
  • The following fixtures cannot be reached from the toilet seat: wash basin, soap dispenser and hand dryer.
  • The height of the toilet seat above floor level is 43cm.
  • The height of the toilet roll holder is 98cm.
  • The wash basin tap type is lever.
  • The height of the wash basin is 86cm.
  • The height of the soap dispenser is 105cm.
  • The height of the towel dispenser is 103cm.
  • The height of the hand dryer is 94cm.
  • The height of the baby change is 89cm.
  • There is no emergency alarm.
  • There is not a shelf.

  • The cubicle has: a waste bin without lid, a nappy/incontinence items bin and a sanitary bin.
