Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys and communication cards.

Route to (Barn Restaurant)

  • From the visitor reception continue ahead and turn right into the shop. Exit the shop into the plant area which has a step, alternatively, turn left and go down a slope and proceed ahead into the courtyard where the Barn Restaurant is located on the left.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are muddy and bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Entrance

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front left of the restaurant.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The steep ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with a handrail on the right going up.
  • The ramp overcomes the steps.
  • There are 4 steps, which are unmarked, with handrails on both sides.
  • Steps are split with a resting area.
  • The handrails cover all steps.
  • Some of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).
  • There is a single manual door which opens towards you.
  • The width of the opening is 92cm.

Eating and Drinking

  • This is a restaurant which serves hot and cold meals and snacks.
  • There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered.
  • Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
  • Menu types include: written wall menus.
  • Menus are not easy to read (unclear font with poorly contrasting colours).
  • The following are available here: drinking straws, takeaway cups, two handled cups, easy grip cutlery, a portable card machine for payment and large-handled mugs.

  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: some of the chairs.
  • All flooring in the area is smooth and even.

Picnic Area

  • The following information describes the picnic area located outside the restaurant.
  • Access into the area is via a slight ramp/slope.
  • The slope is over 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There are tables and bench seats.
  • Some chairs have armrests on both sides.
  • Adapted picnic tables are not available.
  • The standard height for the underside of picnic tables is 73cm.
  • The surface height of the lowest table is 71cm.
  • The surface height of the highest table is 71cm.
  • The following furniture is permanently fixed: some of the chairs.
  • There is step-free level access around some of the area.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to gravel and cobbles.
