Admissions

  • At this location the following are free to access for all visitors: the grounds of the lighthouse, the Marconi Hut museum and second-hand bookshop, the shop and tearoom.
  • At this location the following areas are free to access for National Trust members but payable for everyone else: the lighthouse tower.
  • This site offers companion or carer discounts.

Public Transport

Parking

  • This property does not have a car park.
  • There is a designated drop-off point which is flush to the footpath.
  • There is no vehicle access to this property.
    The only access is via a 2 mile walk from the White Cliffs of Dover Car Park along the coastal footpath.
    It can be arranged so that mobility-impaired visitors/Blue Badge holders can park/be dropped off right outside the lighthouse.
    Please contact the property in advance to arrange this.

Route to (Property - From White Cliffs of Dover Car Park)

  • Exit the White Cliffs of Dover Car Park via the main access point to the cliffs.
    Follow the main path straight ahead along the coastline for approximately 2 miles, until it brings you to the Lighthouse.
  • The route to the area includes more than 3 steps with a handrail.
  • Path surfaces along the route are bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Visitor Reception (Shop)

  • Access into the area is via steps.
  • There are 2 steps, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
  • The door is manual, permanently held open and has a medium colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 85cm.
  • Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
  • There is step-free level access around the area.
  • The majority of aisle widths are under 150cm.
  • There is no room for wheelchair users to manoeuvre (150cm x 150cm) within the majority of the area.
  • All flooring is smooth and even.

  • There is a single manual door which is permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 77cm.
  • There is a second manual door which opens away from you.
  • The width of the opening is 78cm.
  • There are 2 steps beyond the entrance, which are clearly marked, with no handrails.
  • All of the steps are not at the recommended height (between 15cm - 18cm).

Eating and Drinking (Mrs Knott's Tea Room)

  • This is a tea room which serves sandwiches and snacks.
  • There is step-free level access into the area.
  • There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered and table service (on request only).
  • Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
  • Menu types include: written wall menus, menu boards and counter menus.
  • Menus are easy to read (large clear font with contrasting colours).
  • The following are available here: drinking straws, takeaway cups, two handled cups, easy grip cutlery, takeaway cutlery and a portable card machine for payment.

Shop (Marconi Second-Hand Bookshop)

  • Access into the shop is via a step.
  • There is 1 step, which are unmarked, with no handrails.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the door opening is 56cm.
  • Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
  • The majority of aisle widths are over 150cm.
  • Some flooring in the shop is smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to carpet.
  • Some of the flooring has a very shiny finish, which could cause issues with glare or look slippery to some people.

Toilet with Adaptations (Left Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located straight ahead as you enter the toilet block.

  • There is pictorial, written text and ‘Not All Disabilities Are Visible’ signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.

  • The door has a lever twist lock.
  • Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 143cm x 222cm and it does not have a 150cm x 150cm turning space.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the left of the seat.
  • The lateral transfer space is 97cm from the side of the toilet pan to the wall.
  • There is a lever flush on the non transfer side.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the door, a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.
  • There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.
  • The following fixtures can be reached from the toilet seat: toilet roll holder, wash basin and soap dispenser.
  • The following fixtures cannot be reached from the toilet seat: towel dispenser.
  • The height of the toilet seat above floor level is 48cm.
