Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, binoculars, magnifying glass and torch.

  • You can borrow or hire the following mobility vehicles: a mobility scooter. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

Route to (the Parkland)

  • After exiting the visitor centre, follow the gravel path uphill until you reach a gap in the fence and the path splits.
    At this point you are in the parkland surrounding the castle.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a steep ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is a shuttle which can take visitors to this area, but wheelchair users will need to transfer into it.

Outdoor Spaces

  • This information is for the access point located at the end of the gravel path after leaving the visitor centre.
  • Access into the area is via a slight ramp/slope.
  • The slope is over 150cm wide.
  • There is open access at the surveyed access point.
  • The following outdoor facilities are available: parkland, woodland and open countryside.
  • The outdoor spaces include the following surfaces: gravel, compact earth and loose stones.
  • Footpaths are available in all of the outdoor space.
  • The majority of the paths are not wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no step-free level access around the area.
  • There are slight ramps/slopes without handrails and steep ramps/slopes without handrails in the main areas.
  • Slight and steep slopes can be found throughout the area.
    Narrower paths have protruding rocks and tree roots.
  • There are some bench seats situated along the paths for people to rest.
