Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • You can borrow or hire the following equipment: manual wheelchairs and mountain trikes. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.
  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, binoculars, magnifying glass and torch.
  • You can borrow these from Visitor Reception. View more information about booking and collection of equipment.
  • Powered mobility vehicles cannot be borrowed or hired.

Route to (Welcome Café)

  • Exit Visitor Reception and head to the right.
    Turn left down the far side of the Café, and the accessible entrance is on the left.
  • The route to the area is step-free level.
  • Path surfaces along the route are paving stones and bonded gravel.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is no accessible shuttle to this area.

Entrance

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the right side of the café.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The slight ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There is a single automatic door which opens by sliding.
  • The width of the opening is 110cm.

Eating and Drinking

  • This is a café which serves hot and cold meals and snacks.
  • There is a counter where food and drink can be ordered.
  • Staff can provide assistance and offer service to tables.
  • Menu types include: written wall menus.
  • Menus are easy to read (large clear font with contrasting colours).
  • The following are available here: drinking straws, takeaway cups, two handled cups, easy grip cutlery, a portable card machine for payment, large-handled mugs and large-handled cutlery.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.
  • There is background noise here which varies, depending on the time of day.
  • There is a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system was tested, however it was not working at the time of the survey.

  • The surface in the picnic area is not smooth and even.
  • Where the flooring is not smooth or even, this is due to gravel.

Entrance (Toilet Block)

  • The entrance surveyed is located to the left of the Welcome Café.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The slight ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with handrails on both sides.
  • There are double manual doors which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 110cm.
  • There is a small lip on the threshold of the entrance with a height of less than 1.5cm.

Changing Places

  • Location and Access View
    • The facility is additional to standard and accessible toilets, and is not located close to other managed facilities.
    • There is step-free level access into the facility.
    • There is pictorial signage on or near the door.
    • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
    • The width of the door opening is 86cm.
    • The door has a lever twist lock.
    • Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
    • The door does not have a horizontal grab rail.
    • The dimensions of the facility are 390cm x 270cm.
    • The ceiling height is at a minimum height of 2.4m and there is a clear 200cm x 180cm manoeuvring space in the facility.
    • The facility has a non-slip floor.
  • Toilet Details View
    • There are lateral transfer spaces on both sides of the seat.
    • The transfer space on the right as you face the toilet is 276cm.

Toilet with Adaptations (Ambulant - No Lateral Transfer)

  • This toilet is located in the toilet block, on the right.
  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • This toilet is approximately 3m from the toilet block entrance.
  • There is pictorial signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a high colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 86cm.
  • The door has a lever twist lock.
  • Internally the door has a high colour contrast.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 190cm x 215cm and it has a turning space of at least 150cm x 150cm.
  • There is not a lateral transfer space next to the seat.
  • There is a lever flush on the right, but there is no transfer space.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the left as you face the toilet, a vertical grab rail on the left as you face the toilet, a vertical grab rail on the right as you face the toilet and vertical grab rails on both sides of the wash basin.
