Equipment and Resources to Borrow

  • Sensory packs can be borrowed which include: ear defenders, fidget toys, magnifying glass and soft toy.

  • You can borrow or hire the following mobility vehicles: mobility scooters. It is highly recommended that these are booked in advance, where this is possible. Please check the National Trust website for details.

Route to (Nostell House)

  • On exiting the visitor reception, turn left out of the stables.
    Follow the path to the left.
    The path leads to the front of the house.
    Continue until you arrive at the Front Entrance on the left.
  • The route to the area is step-free via a slight ramp/slope.
  • Path surfaces along the route are tarmac and cobbles.
  • The majority of the paths are wide enough for wheelchair users.
  • There is a shuttle which can take visitors to this area, but wheelchair users will need to transfer into it.

Entrance (Front)

  • The entrance surveyed is located at the front of the house.
  • There is step-free access via ramp at the entrance.
  • The slight ramp is between 75cm and 150cm wide, with no handrails.
  • There are double manual doors which are permanently open.
  • The width of the opening is 157cm.

Reception

  • There is step-free level access to reception.
  • The height of the reception counter is 92cm.
  • There is not a low level desk or counter at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • Lighting levels are low.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise here.
  • The counter has a clearly signed hearing assistance system.
  • The hearing assistance system could not be tested at the time of the survey.

Lift

  • A member of staff needs to be notified for use of the lift.
  • The floors which are accessible by this lift are G and 1.
  • Externally the lift has: a door with a medium colour contrast to the surroundings, buttons with a high colour contrast to the surroundings and controls that are not at a suitable height for a wheelchair user.
  • The lift does not have a recommended turning space (150cm x 150cm) in front of it.
  • The lift door opening width is 80cm.
  • The dimensions of the lift are 96cm x 145cm.
  • Internally the lift has: controls that are not at a suitable height for a wheelchair user and buttons with a high colour contrast to the surroundings.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.

Stairs

  • The floors which are accessible by stairs are G and 1.
  • There are more than 20 steps between floors.
  • The steps are not clearly marked with handrails on both sides.
  • The highest step is 16cm high.
  • Lighting levels are moderate to good.

Tour

  • The tour is self-guided but volunteers/staff are available to provide additional information.
  • The tour takes approximately 1 hour.
  • There is step-free access via lift throughout the tour.
  • There are doorways or openings used on the tour which are under 75cm wide.
  • The majority of walkway widths are between 120cm and 180cm.
  • The tour route may vary depending on the season.
  • There is no (or very little) background noise along the tour route.

  • There are chairs without armrests at regular intervals along the tour.

Toilet with Adaptations (Right Hand Transfer)

  • This toilet is located on the ground floor, at the left side of the house.
  • There is step-free level access into the toilet.
  • This toilet is approximately 30m from the Front Entrance.
  • There is no signage on or near the door.
  • The door is manual, opens outwards and has a low colour contrast with the surrounding walls.
  • The width of the toilet door opening is 84cm.
  • The door has a twist lock.
  • Internally the door has a low colour contrast.
  • The dimensions of the cubicle are 236cm x 205cm and it has a turning space of at least 150cm x 150cm.
  • There is a lateral transfer space to the right of the seat.
  • The transfer space on the right as you face the toilet is 94cm.
  • There is a lever flush on the transfer side.
  • The following grab rails are available: a horizontal grab rail on the non transfer side and a vertical grab rail on the transfer side.
  • There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side.
  • The following fixtures can be reached from the toilet seat: toilet roll holder.
